what is >>Apply Alpha Channel<< for?

Hi All
can someone please tell me what the selectable setting PNG + Apply Alpha Channel is meant for?
I assumed that the rendered PNG image would at least be a cutout, isolated from the background or at least a file that is actually equipped with an Alpha Channel…

Hi @EGIESTO , thanks for your post.

If you hover over “Apply Alpha Channel” you will see the tooltip say “Exports the image with the alpha channel applied. The background (sky) is transparent”.

So this should behave like you’re expecting though we’ve resolved a previous problem in regards to the Alpha Channel not being properly applied when using the Orthographic projection mode. Could you kindly try our latest preview instead and report back if you’re still getting the same results?

Thanks a lot in advance.

It worked fine for me.

Just rendered yesterday:

@EGIESTO there was a known issue in that regard if orthographic projection is set in the 3.5.6 release.

We’ve fixed that for the upcoming 4.0. You might want to check-out our latest preview.

…thanks to All for your help

ok, I installed this latest preview “Enscape-4.0.0.560-preview6”

  • now Enscape has completely disappeared.
  • Not even Enscape´s icon bar is available within SketchUp now.
  • Enscape is also no longer listed as an extension in SketchUp´s extensions menu now.

…tried to go back to “Enscape-3.5.6+204048” - unfortunately this doesn’t work.
With these messages the installation aborted:

Hello! Can you try first uninstalling Enscape using the steps from the thread below and then try re-installing the preview version?

RE: Previous Release / Preview Threads Merged

…Thank you for your message Ilias Kapouranis

On the one hand, I don’t really understand what exactly needs to be done or how and on the other hand, I’m not allowed to use such an uninstall tool on my company´s computer. (I deinstalled Enscape before by using Windows instead)

The gist of the problem is that the installer of preview versions of 4.0 were not uninstalling previous versions correctly in some cases and were leaving some information that should be deleted.

By using an external uninstaller program such as the one mentioned in the thread, we are making sure that everything is deleted and then any new Enscape installation will work as expected. Maybe you could coordinate with your company’s IT team so that they can handle it themselves?

(install-uninstall issue is solved by using Revo Uninstaller)

Hi All
and for Your information about my Alpha Channel Issue above:
in this respect, Enscape Preview 4 actually works well

Keep in mind 3.5 had a bug with that exact same feature. Even if you have the checkmark, the PNG still comes with the sky.

Solution is here: [URGENT] Version 3.5 doesn’t export PNGs with transparent backgrounds

When Fog Intensity is 0, even if you have Alpha Channel (ie transparent background) checked in the Output menu, the rendering will come out with the background.

Turning Fog Intensity to anything other than 0 (in my case I put it on 1) is the solution.
