Just wondering is that me or it’s like that for everyone. So I’ve found this unbelievably frustrating bug in 3dsmax 2017+: in perspective mode without object selected if you zoom with mouse wheel on the object - the speed of the zooming is, for example, x1, if you move the mouse out of object and zoom on blank space - it becomes like x20. Is there a setting or something responsible for that behavior? Or that is another bug, introduced by AD just to patch it later with another “improvement” “update”?
I don’t get that happening for me either in 2017 or 2018
Seen that coming
Here it is video demonstrating this https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/z4dfoy1x6750mjp/record\_170904\_110703.gif
Again, I am not sure if that is a bug or some settings? Would be happy to know. Units are fine (inches) and the scene is built near 0.0.0 coordinates.
Doesn’t happen for me in max 2018.2
I did not update yet, but i have this behaviour in 2018. And i did not see anything about that in their changes list. Maybe they changed it back by accident - they same way how they broke Orbit navigation, hah.
I’ve tried this across 8 workstations here at the office, none of them show this behavior.
Possibly your mouse settings doing crazy things?
I have this problem sometimes too. Check if you have objects way far away from the center. I’ve had to reduce my wheel zoom amount in the mouse tab of the customize user interface window. Also, using Alt+mouse wheel slows down the zoom and Shift+z to undo a zoom
I’d be happy if you will let me know where that setting is, i tried everything and nothing helps…
Yeah, that helps a bit, though problem still persists. There is no objects too far away - nothing ususal. And again - in 2016 there is no such problem. I open the same scene in 2016 , after that in 2017 and 2018. Problem appears only in 2017 and 2018.
Have the same effect, but.. It’s a feature! You can zoom to objects, which I quite like, as I hit the Z-key pretty often anyway.
Didn’t find the setting but there should be something like “zoom to mouse cusrsor” or somthing. If that is off you always zoom to the view-center (which kind of sucks imho). I guess, that might maybe change the described behavior.
That setting is not what i am talking about. I am talking about speed increase - not the zoom center. Please check video i am showing, you will see significant zoom speed increase on epmpty area and usual zoom speed on non-empty area.
In your mouse control panel check if you have a setting for the wheel : on mine it is called “Accelerated scrolling” If this is activated, zooming in 3ds max becomes totally nuts.
Try with this:
In section of your 3ds max.ini
AdaptiveNavigation=0
will try this one, thanks !
This is interesting, will try as well, thanks!
UP: none of that helped… I use Razer Abyss 2014 and I don’t have that accelerated scrolling option either in mouse settings or in razer settings center…
So I double checked with everyone again this morning and one person has something similar happen, but not quite the same. Most of the mice at the office are Logitech. Anyways, when the active app in windows is Chrome or Firefox, move the mouse over the max viewport to zoom with scroll can create a similar behavior. If you click anywhere outside of Max and the web browser, then click Max, then try to zoom, it all works fine.
Basically what is happening is that the mouse is using the scoll settings for the browser instead of standard scrolling used in Max. I don’t really think that is your issue, but it did behave similarly as to your video. Weird!
As for our settings, again we are using mostly Logitech Performance MX mice. The mouse wheel is set to behave like a middle button. Then scrolling settings are set to 3 lines per click with adaptive scrolling or accelerated scrolling turned off. Depending on your mouse settings, you may also want to try turning off smooth scrolling if that is an option as well.
I have a Razer DeathAdder at home and it behaves as expected. So I’m kind of stumped why would be getting such strange behavior.
Short of uninstalling ALL mouse driver related software from Razer, and just using the default windows drivers for the mouse to see if maybe that is the problem? I know you can make custom mouse settings per application with the Logitech and Razer mice, maybe something get messed up in there?
Thanks a lot for checking that! I am checking couple of different scenes and looks like this behavior is not the same everywhere. What i will try to do is get a scene where this bug persists 100% and will post it here, just to check with you guys how that will work.
I tried with and without Razer drivers - it is the same. Tries different settings, speeds and etc - does not change anything.
Correction - I do get this happening and yes, it is a pain ![]()
I’m using a Sharkoon FireGlider and updated to the latest drivers installed and still didn’t fix things.
Ok, I’ve isolated the issue. It is the size of ANY object. Check how the bug intensity changes, depending on size of a single object in the scene: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/d2ofprysfalzlo5/record\_170912\_100256.gif
Bigger the object is - the bigger becomes “step” of zooming when you are “scrolling” mouse on empty space.
I will be happy if that is just an annoying setting, introduced for “our convenience”, proving that AD cares about our nerves.
That makes sense to me, I’m only now seeing it whilst working on a big model of a ship (so, quite similar in length/wide/height ratio in your examples) - quite frustrating.
Have you posted anything on Autodesk’s forums ? Alfred is very good at attending to these kinds of gripes users have.
Nope, I did not as first I was trying to catch this, to be 100% sure it is a bug. Also, there is this old bug with Orbit mode losing its focus - still was not fixed… And it is posted on Autodesk forums…
Well done for your perseverance ![]()
