Hello Chaosgroup team,
All the news from Autodesk since they took over Maya tends to prove that 3dsmax will be devoted to game and not anymore to archviz.
As an Autodesk partner, you probably should be aware about the future of such software.
Will be good to share with us, because if we need to shift to other software, better to know it sooner than later.
I don’t think you’ll get anything besides what Autodesk has officially said/announced. If Chaos Group has any information you can be sure there is an NDA in place to prevent them from talking about it.
Yeah they told me max was going to be discontinued.
No seriously, this talk has been going around for few years now. Realistically it won’t happen. Not like they will remove tools that make max good at archviz or other tasks, why would they. Maya sucks every new version is worse and worse, I fear its max that’s getting better Actually I take it back both are terrible
I don’t understand any more why this comes up every year. I don’t see 3Ds Max getting see EOL coming any time soon. There are still people using Softimage after EOL. Even if you’d have to shift to another piece of software it’s not like you have a week to do so, if you wanted you could take 2 years or as long as you wanted.
The installed base for arch viz is so massive AD would be nuts to mess with, imho. Even though we’re seeing AD push Revit more and more, arch viz is a totally different beast. The tools we need/use, the type of work we do… To dismiss this crowd would be a huge mistake.
Fear not. Max just turned 25 today (yes!), and it’s not going anywhere for the forseeable future.
3dsmax outsells maya about 11 to 1, the market for it is huge and it’s the cash cow of the 3d apps for autodesk. Won’t be going anywhere soon, the subscription / licensing model is a pain in the ass though.
Yep - there’s been plenty of nothingy versions of max, I’m only now moving to 2016 in work. I’d hazard that plus some plugins would be totally fine for me to carry out 95% of my work so if I had to keep paying once I’d gone past the purchase cost of the software I’d be quite annoyed.
same with maya, they keep making “rewrite” versions which totally breaks everything too. Like maya 2016 is just out, as is very buggy, now there is already talk about 2017, so what all of a sudden 2016 is old news? what about bug fixes and sp? Maya 2015 is up to sp6 and still is so bad on bugs. Charging money for such software releases imo is next to stealing. When software bugs out in production and costs you time and your own money when you already paid for it - and of course Autodesk will never care about your problems, its a one sided relationship
Yeah, if you go through this thread it looks that Maya is a world of pain and that 3ds Max users should not complain too much: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=8106505#post8106505 And then you have another similar thread about dealing with Xgen.
Modo started development more than 10 years ago. Look where it is today and you may guess part of the answer. It will take many years until any new platform even begins to approach 3ds Max in terms of stability, functionality and performance.
I look at max/maya like windows. Windows 7 is a great os, everything works, its 64 bit. Yes there are some limitations and problems. So why not work on fixing them? Nooo, we have to make windows 8, which is worse then 7, users complain so much we have to make 8.1, then we make 10 which is also loaded with issues. Why?? just have one os and refine it.
Same with those programs. Max 2014 and 2015 are the same program with different coatings. Same with maya, its marketing cash grabbing bs. I remember time when max/maya would release a new version every few years. It was truly new. Now it seems “new” releases are a daily event.
Even with houdini, nuke etc. I just need one stable piece of software that can get the job done!
Like cars, leasing really only makes sense to a few select people, however, we are being forced into it with our software. What if car manufacturers forced everyone to lease, instead of buy? I see absolutely no reason to upgrade to MAX 2016, from 2015, or 2014 for that matter. Why in the heck am I going to be forced to pay each year for something I probably won’t want?
it’s the justification that they found for charging those “leasing fees” …I’m paying subscription and I don’t install the latest version because I’m tired to do it … waiting for some service packs and reading in forums if really make sense install them is 3-4 months after the release and maybe in 6 months there is a new version available.
I’m pretty sure the future of 3ds Max is more than safe. It is important to remember that Autocad, Revit etc is the bread and butter of Autodesk’s profit, and that Max is their premiere tool for doing quality product visualization from these packages. They go hand in hand.
You could argue that Maya is the odd one, because VFX and entertainment isn’t Autodesk main profit income.
I think they just got complacent with Max development for a lack of competition and is finally getting their act together now. There has been some nice, new features in 2015+Ext/2016, and they certainly wouldn’t invest all the time in MCG if they were looking to phase out max in 5 years time.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind a more streamlined user interface. There is a lot of clicking this, clicking that in the Material Editor when setting up a material for example, but that is another topic.
