WinXP 64-bit Network hangs

Running XP-64 bit with mix Win2k and Win3k servers. For the most part
no issues but my machine but locks/seizes in what appears to be a
random way but frequently, every 1-5 minutes. The autosave is 20 mins, it is a Dual Opteron 280, 6GB RAM and Nvidia 4500 512Mb.

The CPU and RAM do not show as being underload when this occurs, looks
mostly like network access of some sort. This does not appear to occur
when I am working locally.

The others in my room are XPsp2 and Win2k, no reported issues.
There is one other machine in the shop that is single dua core, 2GB ram
and experiences the same probem.

Been probing MS site and others with no success, anyone got a tip or two?

It might be a virus that’s hitting your box from somewhere else. I have not seen this (I’m on XP64). I did have this problem once on regular XP… finally turned out to be a processor overheating because the fan was failing in an undetectable way.

just to be sure its not a funky CPU issue, make sure you ahve the AMD driver installed.

Also make sure you ahve the absolute latest motherboard and onboard NIC drivers installed.

And it definitly only happens when using max on a network file?

I’d like to point out that that driver is for Athlon 64 chips, not Opterons.

Hmmmm… apparently AMD’s site says its for Opterons, even though the installer says “Athlon 64 Processor Driver”

Have you checked your event log? You might find some suspicious entries prior to each system freeze… if so, I have had a similar problem.

Unfortunately I’ve not found a solution. In my case, the problem seems to occur due to having local drives mapped as network drives.

Maybe you have the same problem… maybe not,

Thanks guys, trying a few things, looks like it happens outside of MAX as well. Checking trying things now. Tried some things Juju had posted did not work though, not running NetBios and have host files updated.
It is weird, and annoying.

A complete system freeze? I don’t think that’s network related. If it is a complete freeze, then it sounds like a memory issue. Ren memcheck or the memory tester from the Microsoft website:
