[WIP] Staircase, for my house

I started working on a night shot for one of my school designs. For i nightshot, i have to show a lot of lit interior, and since i have a huge window to light my staircase i decided to model something fast.

Well, since i don’t have any access to architectural magazines, and i was too lazy to search online i just started making something very simple and minimalistic. The window was supposed to be made out of glass blocks, so i figured that anything seen through them wont be recognizable anyway.

I kinda ended up liking the design, and now i’m trying to make it more feasible and somewhat logical.

Since i don’t know much about stair construction or materials, i’m not sure if something like this is possible, or if it needs to be much thicker or whatnot.

Anyway, i’ve set up a quick enviroment for this, and the render ended up looking kinda nice, so i decided to share. Sorry for such a long introduction.

I’ve done a minimal amount of photoshop work on it. Since it was saved as exr and kinda overexposed, i played with the exposure settings, and now i’m going mental because i don’t remember the exact numbers. Afterwards i’ve hit autocolor just for fun, and i’ve added a taaaad of glow (it’s the blue hint you can see on the overexposed windows on the top). It’s wip in every way, i wan’t to improve both the rendering and finish my design.

its awesome…
i thought this was a reference photo!
anyways…i kind of dislike the design of the black frame on the wall…but thats just me…other than that the stair itself looks “doable” constructionwise imo

Thanks.

At first i only made the black frame around the stairs themselves, but then i didn’t know what to do with it on the second flor since it sticks out and ends abruptly. A thought occured that i could raise it all the way up to the hand rail and then circle around and so i ended up with a frame. It’s a concept of sorts, i kinda like it. although i still haven’t figured out what to do with the middle.

very very nice.
it can be done. it’s possible. trust me.

It looks great - if anything the grain and the overexposure make it more realistic - they kind of look like the mistakes you’d get in photography.

thats an amazing render.
really good.

excellent job on the concrete.

Really nice image, congrats!

wow… I’m curious to see an highter résolution image…

Impressive.

Polycarbonate? Glass? Frosted glass? Red paint? :stuck_out_tongue:

Great image as it is!

Isn’t it photo?
Very nice image! I like a lot the concrete.

Ahh come on, this isnt a WIP its a photo stop lying to us

Great render dude.. looks really good!!

Thanks for the nice comments

I’m trying to find good glass blocks reference images. My current material is really simple, i’d like to improve it because no one seems to recognize them as such.

displace the glass wall… that should do it. well i tried once, with
a bitmap made in photoshop, looks quite good, but render abit longer…

Render looks great I like the stair design too

Somebody shared a glass block a while ago might do a search to find it

I just uploaded some glass block to www.six4one.com

Excellent!.. It’s hard to say that isn’t photo…
Could you post image before PS?
Thanks

Hey Pailhead, very very nice render.
I to thought it was the reference until I couldn’t find any more images!
Concrete walls are excellent. (Care too share?)

Depending on what is in-between the 2 flights then this stair should stand up.
I have seen many similar stairs, and drawn a few similar (being a stair draughtsman/part-time-stair-designer)
The black thick zig-zag stringers following the shape of the stair treads would be a structural element. The Treads look a touch thin for that span.

Hey,

This is the original image,

I’ve tried creating a complex tile model/material, but it took a while just to get the lightcache half done, and it seemed like i lost a bit of reflections overall. The glass wall did look nice though, so i’ll try to work on a compensation, soemthing that will look better but still be pretty optimized.

looks like there’s some water spillage on the bottom step in the large image - remember to mop up before taking photos

Nah, i just need to tweak it a bit.
