I want to encode using wmv9 but there are always some issues.
First is the well known issue of the washed color when using the free “windows media encoder 9” standalone.
Is there any soluction besides trying ti invert the effect in the sources??
Another method is using the wmv9 codec (and vcm) in combustion.
Strangly, as some say the washed colors are a codec issue, the resulting colors are ok.
The problem with this last method is a tearing that appens near the bottom of the movie.
I’m using 800x600 format but if I crop it to PAL the problem still persists.
I really like the wmv9 quality and compatibility so…if someone could help me finding solution would be great.
I’ve had the same problem with “tearing” on the bottom of all the WMVs I encode, so I’ve since gone back to using MPEG2. I’d be interested to hear what everyone else uses for codecs when sending to clients -- it’s a tough balance of quality vs readily available codecs.
That’s what I’m using now, and all my videos tear. Check this out, one of my coworkers found this (Windows Media Encoder Studio Edition Beta) today trying to resolve our encoding problem. But it won’t install on Windows X64.

These are my other alternatives but I was trying to stick to the most standard format.
Xvid puts its logo in the begining of the animation and I’m nor sure if you need to install a codec to view it.
h.642 needs quicktime right?
Other issue is that often clients want to use animations in powerpoint presentations…
I’m just a bit stunned that the standart format from the largest companie can’t be use. Really weird!? Yhey don’t even aknowledge it.

Does anybody know of an encoding that can do 3gp or 3g2 encoding for encoding to mobile phones? - I downloaded the windows media encoder but I can’t seem to get it do to that format.
Use x264 its the same as h264 but it has a public licence, just like divx and xvid.. you gotta pay for divx and xvid is free and well alot better now days as well.
You may have to experiment abit as a few of the intial files I have converted end up not being playable thru Media player classic and only thru mplayer and VLC media player.
I need to look into that a little bit. But yeah its a good codec, but dont expect anything over 10-15fps encoding rate at any reasonable resolution.
Xvid is another good option, the quatliy isnt quite the same as x264 but its ALOT quicker and the new builds semi support multiple processors. www.koepi.org for the last “unstable” build to get the SMP support.
Windows Media Video 9 VCM Codec maybe not the best codec but it does work well and mediaplayer will autodownload it if it isn’t install. Basically just wmv9 in an avi wrapper, We use it for all our dailies and never have tearing. Does a pretty good job of encoding and is pretty quick.
Quicktime player can do that, at least from version 7, i do it all the time for my nokia 6630 and the quality is superb. You’ ll need to pump up the settings and I guess u should go pro before that, though.
