XEON vs. i7 again - TESTING INTERIOR SCENE

Hi guys,

Some of you might say that it was discussed so many times before, but I believe that still not enough
The more we test the better understanding we have about how Vray works with i7 and Xeon CPUs.

So I did this pretty simple interior scene for CPU testing.

Here’s what I got:

Time: 9 min. 16s.
CPU: 3930K (no OC)
Vray: 3,0
MAX: 2014
Win7

And if you have i7 or Xeon please join the test too!

Testing scene [here (max 2014 Vray 3.0)

](Dropbox)

Edited post to reflect new file post:

Time: 2 min. 35 sec
CPU: i7-5960x @ 4.14 GHz
Vray: 3.0
Max: 2015
Win: 8.1

Time: 4 min. 57 sec
CPU: E5 2650 v2 (2.6GHz, no OC)
Vray: 3.0
Max: 2015
Win: 7

turned off bitmap pager which had my initial render at 11 min. 38.3 sec…

This is really important to turn off, otherwise it’s not really a meaningful comparison of anything.

Best regards,
Vlado

You are right guys.
But please do not change anything else in the settings (except turning off bitmap paging) … otherwise the comparison is also useless

So lets do it one more time. Now in a proper way:

Time: 4 min. 10s.
CPU: 3930K (no OC)
Vray: 3,0
MAX: 2014
Win: 7
Bitmap paging: OFF!

To avoid missunderstandings I have also updated the scene (link in post#1)
Bitmap paging is OFF now.

Is Bitmap paging not off by default? I’ve never used it, and only seen reasons not to use it on here! And by the speed improvement its clearly not good to use. I’ll put some benchmarks for a couple of blades, and workstations when I have time.

Time: 1 min 36s.
CPU: Dual Xeon CPU E5-2697 v2 @ 2.7GHz
Vray: 3.0
Max: 2014
Win: 7

Time: 1 min 43s.
CPU: Dual xeon - E5-2670 v2 @2.5
Vray: 3.0
Max: 2014
Win: 7

Time: 3 min 28s.
CPU: i7 - 4930k @3.4 with OC
Vray: 3.0
Max: 2014
Win: 7

Interesting…

It is off by default in newer 3ds Max releases, however there were a few Max versions that had it enabled and from there it has crept up in a lot of scenes.

Best regards,
Vlado

Time: 3 min 52s.
CPU: i7 - 3930k @4.0 with OC
Vray: 3.0
Max: 2014
Win: 7

Time: 1 min 38.1s.
CPU: Xeon E5-2687 v2 @3.4 - 4.0GHz
Vray: 3.0
Max: 2014
Win: 7

Let’s see if someone will get it under a minute

Best regards,
Vlado

Time: 1 min 36s.
CPU: Dual Xeon CPU E5-2695 v2 @ 2.4GHz
Vray: 3.0
Max: 2014
Win: 8.1 x64

Waiting for your score, Vlado

It’s quite remarkable that your xeon which is almost exactly the same as mine apart from the .3 Ghz higher frequency and the price, it scores exactly the same.

Possibly my system wasn’t as optimal as it could be. It had been on for a few days and had a few sessions of max etc open. Probably had we paid full price for it I’d be annoyed.

Here’s the news.

I sent the testing scene to a company in my country (Poland) that provides high end worstations for 3D rednering etc.
They tested their newest (and as far the most powerful) PC that runs with Dual Xeon CPU E5-2696 v3 @ 2.3GHz
Hard to google it?
They told that it is a very, very rare CPU that you can find in e.g. Dell workstations but not as seperate part to buy.
They also claim that it performs pretty much the same like Dual Xeon CPU E5-2699 v3

So this machine has “only” 36 cores (2x 18 ) and 72 threads

This is the score and specs that I got from the company:

Time: 59.7s. !
CPU: Dual Xeon CPU E5-2696 v3 @ 2.3GHz
Vray: 3.0
Max: 2014
Win: 7sp1 x 64

So Vlado … is this what you were looking for?

The company is called gpucomputer (as I can see they have their website ony in polish)

Yes  This is sweet! How much does it cost?

Best regards,
Vlado

This is their offer that I have found:
CPU: Dual Xeon CPU E5-2696 v3 @ 2.3GHz
Mohterboard: Supermicro X10
2 Xeon 2696v3
DDR4 32 GB
PSU 1000W
GPU: gtx 760 4 GB

And this workstation costs around 5.800 euro + VAT.

The guy from GPUcomputer say their offer is significantly cheaper than 2699 v3 (I think both CPUs are not yet officially launched).
