Seeing what looks like bucket variation in renders, as if it's different gamma per bucket

As you can see in this crop there are visible variations between buckets and it appears to not be just two variations, but many ranging from "normal" and darker down to black. This is an entourage pass to be comped into another shot, so a material wrapper is being used to matte everything else out, but aside from that a pretty standard scene. It is using Anima, but we did some teapot tests and it's happening there too.

It sounds like this happens only in 3ds Max, right? This is not a report for rendering in Chaos Cloud or am I mistaken?
