  • GPU rendering switched to "Progressive"

    Hi all,

Every time I set up a gpu rendering in buckets chaos cloud publishes the job and changes it to progressive. Any reason why this is so?

    Hello,

This is done on purpose since V-Ray 5, it was recommended by our GPU team, because Progressive mode is performing faster than Bucket for the latest V-Ray GPU versions.

Understood, the only problem is my computer renders it in literally half the time that chaos cloud does, which I tested to make sure. I want to use chaos cloud but if it's going to be twice as long, it's not really worth it. What graphics card do the chaos cloud machines use?

The still jobs run on 4 x NVIDIA Tesla T4, for animations each frame uses 1 x NVIDIA Tesla T4 , let me know the cloud id of the job you ran on the cloud, so I can check if there were any issues during the rendering.

          here:s the cloud id

I ran this on my computer for 17 minutes despite only having 1 3080 rtx. Pretty sure i double check render settings to make sure they were the same too.

Thank you for the report zach_ryder

The reason we recommend Progressive mode over buckets is that it is usually faster(only for V-Ray GPU), and it uses a lot less VRAM. Keep in mind, the Cloud is only using 16 GB of GPU memory which is not a lot.
In your case here it seems that Bucket mode is faster somehow, I will take a look at your scene shortly to see what is going on
On another note, Chaos Cloud uses Tesla T4 GPUs. Your RTX 3080 is nearly 5x faster than a single Tesla T4, this ratio could be higher if you are using RTX mode because the 3080 has second generation RT cores, so depending on the scene it could make your rendering faster.
I will get back to you after checking your scene,

Hi Muhammed, wanted to see if you every followed up on this. Still struggling to understand how gpu works for chaos cloud. It seems a little pointless to me as it take just as long as cpu (unless I use my own computer)
