So this was a very fun and completely insane project to play a part in... Some friends of mine (www.tado.co.uk) were commissioned to design an installation for the APM Mall in Hong Kong for Chinese New Year. They work in 2D but we've worked together on a couple of projects in the past where I've made 3D versions of their character designs. They asked me to work up some 3D turnarounds of their characters so that the factory in China would have a better understanding of how to translate the characters in the real world.
I used 3ds Max and Zbrush to model the characters, I also wanted to do some nice renders of them - V-Ray to the rescue!
Here's the original 2D concept for one of the pigs
And here's my 3D version
Turnaround
But the craziest thing about the whole process is how incredible the factory in China were are making these things into HUGE statues, and in almost no time at all.
And here's some of the smaller characters
No renders of this guy, but here's the dragon's head
Original concept
My version
And the real thing(!!)
Whole gang together
And finally, the actual installation in the mall itself.
Wish I could go and visit them in person!
