  • Interior test scene

    Hi folks,

One test scene I setup recently to explore 'that airy look for interiors' - after reading this great thread

This is rendered with Reinhard set to 1.0, no LUT (I tried several LUT's out but was never really happy with the outcome, so switched it off)
Exposure enabled in VFB, with the Highlights turned right down
No Curves within vfb, but a slight curve was added in PS

Lighting is just a dome outside and a PG Skies HDRI added, no fill lights.

Test room scene 01 by Phil Grayston, on Flickr

    What do you think?
Doing a lot of interiors lately and I am a bit struggling with a natural, light, airy look. Just one example would be Bertrand Benoits renderings like this:

      Nice work here
      Rendering wise :
-I personally will make it a bit warmer and reduce the blue from the walls
-regarding LUT you just need to make sure you are using Linear LUT ..personally, I use the last one here .(disable convert to Log too ) otherwise with the default VRay settings LUT will act in a weird way
      Design wise:
I'm not an interior designer by profession but I can notice that you are mixing different styles /colors with a not so balanced arrangement that make it hard to relate to the space imo .

I've just checked your portfolio and I loved the photography section!

Simply, I love to put pixels together! Sounds easy right : ))

        Great reply, thanks Max!

Agreed on warming the tones up
I'll check out the LUT link now
And, agreed on the interior design too. As this was a lighting and material study I just grabbed and dropped models in for speed. I'm not an interior designer either, but I'll try harder with that.

Thanks very much for the website comment. It really needs updating, but who has time for that!

          Looking really good! Well done.
what is your black and white range ? I suspect the blacks are 0-5 with reinhard at 1 and quite pure white to get such white levels???

The material diffuse setting you mean?

If so black in the lamp shade is very low at 0! White is 180 with a texture map, which is 232 - I hadn't realized the map was lighter tbh.

For reference - black plastic objects on my desk like a mouse, wacom tablet and keyboard are hovering between 30 and 50 on a 0 - 255 scale!

Thanks. I hadn't realised the blacks were so dark, or lights so high to be honest. I'll correct those

I must try and apply this to a nice external scene, as I need to improve with that more imo.
