  • Baby Yoda - The Hollywood Reporter

So this was a fun, if slightly insane way to wrap up the year!

The Hollywood Reporter needed an illustration of Baby Yoda for their front cover, but the only catch was there was less than 6 days to create him (and the scene). I agreed to do it and I'm glad I did, although it was pretty intense!

From the technical side, I created his little robes and the sash with Marvelous Designer. His face and hands we sculpted, retopologised and UVd in Zbrush. For the texturing, I used Substance Painter for the face and hands and some tiling bitmaps from various sources (surface mimic, texturing.xyz...etc.) for the cloth. The top hat was a stock model (I have modelled one before but could not for the life of my find it!) and I used Ornatrix for his hair and for the fine strands on the cloth. I also used tyFlow to simulate the confetti and also for the bubbles in the champagne glass. Obviously rendered with V-Ray I struggled to get the woollen look of the fluffy fur on his collar and cuffs looking right but I ended up using the ScatterVolume material as it had that right balance of softness and form.

I'm pretty happy with how he turned out.
