  • Entry for the Hugh Ferriss D2 challenge

    Rarely do a personal image but I liked the brief, it also lined up well with me having been thinking about starting a big personal project but not knowing what I should do.



    It's based on this sketch:


    Some crops:







    I use manictime to track what I'm working on and generate timesheets - it has the added helpful feature of taking screenshots every 60 seconds so without much effort, I was able to put together a timelapse of the entire process

        yeah, you can see the tyflow section in the timelapse video - it's an absolute dream to use. created some heavy particles, added gravity & forces to get them to roll around, then fractured the base and turned physx on. both the floor and the broken escalators.
        it was a super basic flow, I was kind of rushing to see if it would work and ended up going with my first pass.

        I had planned to do a dust spreader and some other things but bailed on the idea - was going to try a flow which shot out millions of sand/grain particles at the geometry to build up little piles in corners. the duplicate, collapse to edit poly, proxy workflow is pretty fast - messy, but it's very easy to generate more than you need and delete on review later.

                I didn't really think about the ivy until I sat down to do it, I quickly saved a 2016 version of the scene and tried gwivy, it worked so I rolled with it.
                I only remembered about half way through that someone re-wrote it for later versions of max - http://www.evvisual.com/ivy/ is based on the same code, but I stuck with gwivy in 2016 for all of it.
                the key has always been to slice a bunch of leaf meshes & stalks off a different plant that already has good materials and use those. don't even bother trying to make a custom material or shape. made it pretty quick to get a nice looking result!

                I had a surprising number of experiments that landed first time on this. the tyflow stuff much like the ivy was all born from 'maybe I will try this, see if it could work', that ended up with the first test being used in the final. I cant tell if I got lucky or was just less critical of a perfect result knowing I could paint over it and there was no client.

                  I thought this is ivy gen, but i wasnt sure. Yes, tyflow stuff are great, really cool work. Btw when you destroy it with tyflow, did you use different material on some inner polygons or did you do something different/more complex?

                    i had tyflow change the ID and used the rough concrete material I already had elsewhere in the scene for the exposed areas. it wasn't a great result in the foreground - all looked a bit too sharp. I softened up with a bunch of texture overlays in PS but should have spent a little more time using displacement and something to make it feel more natural.
