  • Oh no, its another Scandinavian apartment ;)

Ok so this was a personal project to try to move away from exterior renders a bit. Based on images from a real estate company called 'Fantastic Frank', which is pretty good for reference.

Rendered with Vray 5 for Maya, GPU.

More can be seen here if you fancy looking, and any crits welcome.

Really good set of images I think, with great lighting and feel.
The only annoying thing is that I don't live there

+1 Like. They feel cozy which is maybe hard to do with a scandahoovian apartment aesthetic.

The rendering style I like most was trying to achieve it but it still a long long way to go...mind sharing some tips?
          Best regards,

yeah, so i have to say I struggle a little myself, especially with my exterior renders, as I always feel they are a bit 'cartoony', and my interiors a little bland. but for this, the only light is from a single HDRI, ( Peter Guthrie 1325_v5_overcast) but I think because its a reasonably small apartment, theres a nice amount of bounce light, so that helped.

Tips wise, I'm not sure how useful they will be but :
            • Having good reference and following that as much as possible stopped me procrastinating a lot, with compositions etc..took the pressure off a little. Check out 'fantastic frank' real estate people, very helpful.
            • This time, instead of modelling everything before adding materials etc, I did it in a more linear fashion, get the lighting nice initially, add the floor and walls and their materials, getting them 90% there before moving on to next bit, this way I enjoyed the process more....little wins etc and it also allows you to explore the camera angles, room compositions a little more.
            • You have to use DOF and using the EV color correction mode on the camera helps a lot with experimenting without it changing the exposure of the images.
            • The only setting i used in the VFB was the exposure correction, with the highlight burn value almost at zero. Then I used camera raw filter in Photoshop to get contrast into the image, reduce highlights in windows etc. Used the clarity slider, sharpness and vignetting etc. I tried to get the raw render pretty close, but those little changes in photoshop make all the difference. ( Left image is in VFB, right is after photoshop treatment)
            • I used a rough cryptomatte from the VFB, to reduce noise in certain areas, just by adding the denoised version over the top in PS, with opacity turned down as I like a little grain.

            • Getting feedback from people who are better than me too, thats always a good one.
