I'm delighted to have taken part in the wonderful Monster Project again! For those who aren't familiar, it's an absolutely brilliant scheme, connecting schoolkids from Austin, Texas with artists from all over the world to create a whole host of fantastic beastly creatures. This will be my 6th year and 6th monster collaboration.
The monster(s) I picked to make fanart of were created by a brilliant kid called Mariah.
I loved how her drawing showed multiple characters, a bright sunny day and ALL of them were smiling. I instantly knew this was going to be a gang of friends, out playing in the glorious sunshine!
This is what I eventually came up with for my interpretation:
On the technical side of things, I sculpted 90% of the characters in ZBrush (mainly as I was getting rusty with it!), the meadow and flowers were all scattered with tyFlow and rendering was V-Ray.
I had a whole bunch of things I wanted to fix on this (more detail on the path, a less clean edge, denser flowers and actual hands on the kid...) but I just didn't have the time with my commercial commitments. Still, I'm happy with how it turned out!
I always have to squeeze these in around commercial commitments and this year was by far and away the hardest to find time for but despite a few 2am finishes, I still had an absolute blast making this and I really hope Mariah likes my fanart as much as I love her original drawing.
