  • some simple tests

hi everyone, post some images (copied from the internet) for some tests,
    i'm new in vray (gpu) and i'm studying lights, materials, composition with simple reference images;
    tips and tricks are welcome
    thanks,
    Matteo

    Looking good overall matteo_speri

A few picky things I have, in the first image you need bump mapping on the concrete walls. It looks smooth now, you can just use the same glossiness map and multiply some noise over it for bump
    It will look better

Also the floor glossiness is off (as if the concrete is wet) , or did you intend for it to look like that ?
    Trees look pretty good!

In the third image marble looks great!
brushed metal needs to be a bit more shiny, you can use anisotropy for this effect instead of bump mapping. It will be faster to render and will look better (It can look good with bump mapping as well if you use more tiling on the pattern and lower the bump amount)
Leather is fine, needs a tiny variation in roughness

I also recommend testing marble with ALsurface material, adding a bit of SSS to iit. It goes a long way
    I did this here

If you have questions let me know

    Best,

thanks Muhammed for the advice; I've seen your bedroom work and it's impressive. I'm trying to understand the difference between sunlight system and hdri
(in vray I feel great in many tests with sunlight alone, for me impressive; I used other rendering engines before and hdri was always much better than sunlight alone).
for materials, in general, I often use the vray material set, and then replace some nodes (for example, in leather, concrete); I will try with bump as you suggest and also with marbles (poliigon textures).. Thank you

Hi, Muhammed_Hamed, you would choose Alsurface over FastSSS, right?

          I haven't touched the FastSSS2 material in years ..
New Translucency in Vray 5.1 beats both by a mile, it should come to Vray GPU in the next update. I look forward to that

For now I only use ALsurface for skin and simple things like Marble on GPU

Yup, the sun and sky system in Vray is pretty good! it was improved in Vray 5 update and supports ACEScg colorspace internally
I use Sun/sky whenever I can, they are very fast to render as well. Some situations still require an HDRI depending on the mood
An HDRI will have cold or warm tones, that will be cast into your interior.. So whatever gets the job done

            Best,

            Muhammed

It is indeed very nice much simpler and faster to set up too. So far I've only used it with single faced leaves instead of 2Sided MTL. Very happy with the results Now I gotta convert all those old materials... xD
