    Hey Richard,

Yeah i remember when you first showed this stuff in the forums, infact i took quite abit of interest back then. As you can see here
    http://www.chaosgroup.com/forum/phpB...asc&highlight=

I can reproduce everything just fine except for the linked xform part, my objects just dont move with the splines.
Could you elaborate on this part a little for me

    Thanks mate

      Hey DaForce;

Just got back from Siggraph so sorry for the late response - the linked X-Form is theoretical (meaning I've never tried it but it should work). If I get a chance this week, I'll give it a shot and post it.

        heheh thats ok

Ahh ok, well when i tried it the spline moved but the object didnt...but to be honest I probabaly just screwed something up.

So if you could try it out and let me know if it works that would be much appreciated

        Thanks Mate

I remembered making such a thing ages ago..
The way I made it was really easy:

Make a mesh with a vertex in each posititon where you want the "pins", place a scatterer on this and a displacement map on the original mesh..

Should work great, the hardest part would be creating the grayscale animated displacement map

              simply unbelievable !!
I would like to know the average rendertime for this amazing clip and why DIGITAL DOMAIN use 3dsmax/vray ?

And did you use vray recently on a film ?

              ps:sorry for my english

So I got my latest copy of Stash. A great DVD magazine, and it featured the NIN video on the cover...

                  http://www.stashmedia.tv/latest/index.html

Here is a quote from the short article inside:

"(...) Digital Domain SVP Ed Ulbrich says Fincher has been toying with the pin box animation idea for almost 10 years; waiting for the right project and CG technology to coincide. According to VFX super Eric Barba "Only" contains 76 fully CG shots with ten more containing some live action (including the opening shot featuring his hand). The hyper-real rendering, which makes virtually impossible to tell the live action from the 3D shots, was accomplished with the raytracing, HDR and global illumination abilities of Vray (a plug-in for 3ds Max) and a rendering farm of 800 machines. (...)"

800 machines? Damn!!!! How often do you upgrade a renderfarm of that size?

well I don't work at DD anymore... but I would suspect that they get added in waves... cycling maybe every 3 years or so... But that is a complete guess on my part.

I work at Sony now... I think we have close to 4000 over there.

lol ya i dont have a problem visualizing sony having 4000 machines for their renderman... i just get googly eyed thinking of 800 machines running vray

Actually considering the fact that Vray is free (for rendernodes) as opposed to renderman which is $3,500 per processor. It is VERY easy to imagine vray running on 800 machines.

the hardest part was making max and vray work on a large farm installation without backburner.

with some nice perl scripting we did it.

i am working on that now outside of dd using deadline and i think we'll have a great solution within a few days. i won't use perl though. i can't stand perl. i am using php script for this to start and manage the render process.

sorry to bring this topic back up again, but...

binding the 'pins' (splines) to the displace spacewarp is no
problem, but when I try to bind a mesh to the spline...no dice!
                              the mesh doesn't move.

It seems like the vertices of the spline move, but sadly not the
                              pivot point.
Does anyone know of a way to bind the mesh to a vertex?

I stupidly sold the idea to my boss without trying it! and now...
                              waaaaaaahahahahaaa!
                              Needs more cowbell
