there's an "amusing" thread about the video on odforce - a respected unofficial Houdini forum - mostly the guys there seem upset that it can be done in max and vray - the pinboard effect was done in x-men first I think

          http://odforce.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=2985&st=0

(I did actually do the pinboard tutorial they mention, a couple of years back and no, a little bit of scripting is not more difficult than Houdini's operator linkage business)

I think people are still sensative to the whole Autodesk buys Maya thing. There is a lot of people hating Autodesk and they feel the need to bash it. Houdini artist get paid a lot of money, because there are not that many of them, and there are millions of max artist getting paid very little. OH MY GOD! What if max artist start replacing Houdini artists? What will that do to Houdini artist salary? OK... it is joke. Max and Houdini are not replacing eachother. Houdini does amazing things, things that would be very hard or nearly impossible in Max... but every try to model in Houdini?

Well - after a long time i heard just rumors and talks about this one i finally managed to watch it today!

First - it's an excellent technical demo for Vray's capabilities!

Unfortunatly i'm not so impressed by that song - and the video from the point of a non computergraphics nerd is simply boring.

With NIN it's the same story - i heard so many people talkin about them - but this song is simple average mainstream stuff with no ups and downs. The Video looks like a stretched Vray Archviz Sample. That Pinbox animations have been discussed years before and lack some kind of a clue.

There is some kind of a minimal climax when the nails touch the glass. Puuh but not enough tension to break it and give us some excitement. Even the final fade off of that little amount of energy is not the clou - hmm.

So please forgive me - but i'm not that impressed. Maybe it's also because i have in mind that the work was done by an almighty player like DD and i expected too much.

From my point of view i.e. the work of some students titled "Cubic Tragedy" is so much more worth to be noticed. (As far as i know it was done in Vray too)

Although most of us tend to love technical stuff over artistic and emotionally crafted pieces, I agree with some of your comments. Script is key. Edition too. But hey this is a vray forum, soooo....

I find it would be good for vray to go find the works that are being made out there with the program and are top notch. I mean, more reviews, interviews, featurettes... It would xtremely valous for the commercial side of vray...we all know in this forum that vray is good for archviz, commercials and films too. The problem out there is that not many people realize that. I remember articles talking about brazil being used in the incredibles, in hellboy....On the other hand, it looks like vray is used from time to time, but i bet it´s used everyday in major studios u wouldn´t think of...but we dont know it because nobody talks about it... Go make some noise, vray guys!
