  • Small Bathroom

A dated bathroom is to be re-modeled. The owner needs to get buy in from his wife. The architect/designer contacted me to provide this rendering.

Looks good! The stone is flat but other than that, good job.

Thanks for your review! I have a lot of displacement on that stone, but is does seem like there should be some shadows under the protruding rocks. Maybe the displace isn't working correctly or....? I will check it out if any revisions are needed.

It's a nice bathroom rendering. Maybe the displacement map res is too low or you need to decrease edge length. But from this angle it will be hard to see the displacement without hard shadows from a directional light. You have one on the ceiling, but the whole bathroom is lit, especially the shower, because it has two very bright windows. So the stone looks flat.
I think what also gives it away is where the wall connects to the ceiling, that border looks odd. And you need to make corrections to the mapping of the stones at the reveal of the window.

Thank you Aebi! I noticed the problem at ceiling, floor amd window edge and agree with the points you make.

Stone definitely looks a little odd...my guess is it's the maps, which are either not quite right (shadows in the diffuse, low res e.g.), or the displacement
            settings/geometry subdivision.
If it helps, I did this quick example with a Megascans surface and it acts as I'd expect and it's how I'd test the displacement..make sure it's working with no diffuse first.

I notice your shower doors have a strange white border which really should be darker in some areas I think...maybe the edges need chamfering a bit

Thank you fixeighted! I will take a look at it and see whats up. I used the same material/maps/ displace once before in this rendering. http://openrangeimaging.com/index.html?mbx=2_14

The architect amd her client love the rendering, I have been paid and have a number of other things that my time is devoted to, so it may be a, take more care in the future type thing.

I do have a lot of chamfer on the shower glass edges.

Your comments and review are very valuable to me. Much appreciated and thanks again!

Yeah I remember seeing that one. Similar issues are present in that also I'm afraid.
If you look you'll see that the displacement doesn't line up with the texture for some reason,
and there is some triangulation occurring. It can all be probably easily fixed, depending on the texture quality to begin with.

Of course I realise these are all done/paid jobs but it just may be worth seeing where the
problem areas are and having a solid process worked out for the next one, to save headaches
I also used to have major issues doing these things but thankfully have gotten them ironed out now.

Strange about the shower thing...oh well...

This project came back after they re designed. I think the new configuration is better than the previous. I added a second view, it seemed necessary. It seems the client is very involved in the design. The architect says he loves the renderings and they have been very helpful for them...so that's cool. The updates are attached.

I don't care for the upper 2-half circle windows, but the renderings look nice.

Funny. The bathroom is in a condo building that was built @ 1982 or so. There are two buildings and they both have those half circle windows in various places, like in the gables and stair towers. So… they gotta stay. I worked as a carpenter on the framing crew that built the building - back in the day.
