  • New Dome Lighting Tests

    Hey all,

Here are some tests I have done with the new dome lights in vray.
What's amazing is that there are NO LIGHTS in the scene. Just one HDRI dome light
    kick ass. vray rules everything.
render time is 4 min per test on a dual p4 2.4ghz machine.

yeah, a little bit of extra info from vlado was a huge help.
i redid the hdri image as well so it's much better/cleaner.

Rob, could you elaborate on this a bit more. What do you mean about redoing the hdri?

I am doing a project right now that would greatly benefit from something like this. How long do we have to wait?

i reworked it a little bit to get really high values in there for better direct lighting. 19 stops of information is not enough of course to capture the sun
i used nuke to create the final hdr after assembling in photoshop.
added more sun values and made sure the colors in the hdr were creating the lighting i wanted.

Wow - now I'm finally getting impatient - but dont want to rush the development team either.

I may have some upcoming projects that could really utilize the standalone/more stable DR. Also, the HDR Dome lights look very promising as you have shown. I can't wait.

                      Thanks Rob,

So does this mean you always have to modify a HDRI to get this kind of output? If so, it would be convenient if the HDRI was preprocessed by Vray to get the higher dynamic range out of the image. Don't know if that's possible though.

The key is now a VERY high quality HDRI. I have been playing with many HDRIs and the dynamic range of your hdri needs to be very high. Many of the ones that I have are not good enough. The only ones that really work (out of the box) are the ones that are done with the Spheron camera. Take 26 stops all at once. Got $100k?

we definitely don't want vray doing the post processing.
that's left to the user to do in an image processing app, imo.

I didn't say postprocessing, but preprocessing Basically what I am trying to say is, whether this new domelight could use 'standard' HDRI images without changing them. What I understood from your post is that you tweak the HDRI. Wouldn't it be nice if it can be tweaked on the fly?

I guess the hdri adjusting is only necessary for hdri's containing a sunlight? How is the dome light with interior hdri's that don't include the extreme brightness of the sun itsself?
