  • Demofilm Rose

    Hi all,

I Would like to hear from you what you think about. We decided to do a demo. For usual we do stills for Designers with parfum bottles, beer bottles, and so on, Now we wanted to do the next step and make a demo to present an example of a parfum for example for television.

Our aim was to use some special effects, for example fluid simulations and so on to show, we can do this and to make a very esthetical aproach to present a parfum.

this one still isnt finished its still work in progress, but we come near to the aim.

Overal it was a technical pain in the ass. we learned Particleflow, Reactor for softbodydynamics ( the leaves of the rose are animiated with reactor cloth), we tried glue 3d which looked promissing at first, but was very unpredictable when it came to a final quality version, so we learned realflow too, we tried afterburn for some steam... and so on.

one of the most difficult tasks was the animated bolean of the bottle.

maxbolean didnt work at all, but powerbolean worked. but in the queuquemanager it stopped allways after one frame. workaround was to make a script to produce all 1200 frames (the actual film is shorter) as single renderjobs in the render queuque.

and also with this solution, each 20th frame leaded to wrong boleans that had to be fixed manualy.

well what did we learn from this ?

first, many programms (also z-brush) which is very important for us.

secound, develloping a storrybord about something so very unpredictable as the movement of fluids is very very very difficult.

making a fluid move exact as you want doesnt work so good. wether its a real fluidsimulation , or its a particlesystem that sometimes doesnt look like a fluid.

so heres the very much compressed film . its still unfinished, but you get the idea.

much fun let me know what you think now. aah and yes the musik will be produced new special for this...

awesome tom, great work. i love the first part of the rose closeup.

how did you handle learning all those programs? did you chose a program each or did you all learn every programs?

      Really impressive !

I like the moment when the liquid comes out of the rose, but when it begins to go down to make the bottle, the rythm seems boken...

          Very nice Tom ,

at least for the first part of the reel, which reflects the subtlety of a perfume very well. I agree with pixelab though: in the end it rushes a bit.

Nevertheless, the overall quality is high

Thanks for all of your comments

seems , we can change the last part a bit.

the musik also will get changed a bit.
We also will produce a shorter short of this and on the other hand a longer version.

What we try to say is "heh, we can do stills, but when you want to show your ideas, we make your commercial too " and now after the end , the film will go on, and the bottle will transform in some nice other smellling things like an oil tank, a big smelling old fish and an old shoe, so we say... ok you dont want a bottle ? doesnt matter we do whatever you want.

about this part i am not allready sure . well lets wait , maybe friday its ready.

                Hi

                to nvanherpt:

well we had some time here, mostly its my part here to learn new programms and to look out whats new. So i usualy take a first step inside, and tell the others what i found out.

this time i did know zbrush, realflow and glue before the project started, but for sure a real project is another thing, and we had notice so many issues and "dont work" things .

At last overal this little project was done in betwween in several steps and much much to slow for real production.

the idea came up in januar. it hot part was about 3 weeks now with many trie and error aproaches.

at last i think we could do now a comparable thing in about 2 weeks now. and this means we now know better what from the beginning we would not try to do but we are still beginners. and i still didnt do my characteranimation also ....

Its very nice Tom! The quality is stunning! But for some reason, I get the impression that the final perfume bottle isn't up to the same level of quality as the rose. Perhaps because so little time is spent here? Perhaps because there's no close zoom/dof effects? I'm not sure.

great work tom, very smooth and original.
My only comment is that the refraction on the floating droplets is a bit strong.
I hope this gets you some good work!

just another look at this excellent piece of work, I think the droplets look too "medical" to be droplet of water/perfume.
Also the bottle at the end of the animation looks really dark, what is the max depth set to?

great work. it really shows a lot of your talents. killing downtime and having something useful at the end is most rewarding, i hope some good comes of it.

one thing that really stood out to me for criticism is the petal that crashes into the bottle at the end. It seems to do some rather strange things - not very organic.

Tom, I have to say roses are one of the hardest things to do, and you got them very well. Exellent closeups. 2 things that kind of were in my eye:
1 - strange almost seemed like fake reflection of the rose in every buble. 2 - the way the leafs are blown by the wind didnt seem natural enough.
These are small things, but for such exellent film I think need to be polished.
                              Great work.
