  • Renovation of Historic Apartment in Florence

    Hi everyone,

I want to share with you a work done a few months ago, the renovation of an historical apartment in Florence.
I produced render for several rooms, including library, living and dining, the entrance, the kitchen, two bedrooms and the terrace.
Hope you like it and as always constructive critics are very welcome

Lets start with the dining room:

Yeah, a really great set of images again

There's something odd going on with this moulding though...mapping I guess. Is there some reason you used bitmaps rather than modeling it all?

Yes I know.. we took some high res photo of the ceiling on site to create the texture and overall they turn out pretty good.
Unfortunately for the dining we discovered too late that a single photo was not sufficient since the room was too large and the lens produced some blur on the corners, we should have take more picture.
BTW in the apartment its all painting without any real moulding, just a tiny curve where the wall meets the ceiling.

For the ceiling textures we started from 10K pictures, then some deformation and corrections to get rid of the perspective and the difference in lighting. Then I mapped the texture with a flat projection over the geometry
                    Here is an example:

                      Some statistics for the project.

The scene was simple but some furnitures were quite complex, beside a couple objects I modeled everything by my self using reference photo from the client, probably the most fun part since I love to work on geometry and shaders.
I used several techniques to get the needed detail, including displacement, Vray Scatter and C4D cloner, C4D volume builder and Vray Enmesh, I'll post some example later.
Rugs and carpets are made using Vray Fur and I've also used a couple of model from my rug collection, just changed a bit the texture.

I keep every room on a single file and in total was about 70 million polygons plus render instances.

The lighting was quite simple, Vray physical sun/sky, some area and spherical light for the artificial light source and a few hidden softbox as fill light where needed.

I build most shaders from scratch using clients samples and a few metals from by bundle, for the wood floor I used real geometry scattered with a cloner and a Vray multisubtex/UVrandomizer to get some variations. For the ceiling and the outdoor background I used photos taken on site.

Usually I stop my render at 0.04 threshold (usually it took about 4hours for a 4K render), but for this project I was not in a hurry so most images have been rendered for a longer time overnight, like 8h to reach about 0.01 noise threshold. Intel denoiser took care of the noise where needed.

In total I worked on the project for about a month.

The fun part.. modeling and shading the furnitures

                        An acrylic coffe table.
I used C4D volume builder to blend the geometry, a basic Vray SSS shader plus some dust on top of it:

For this floor lamp I used C4D volume builder to blend the geometry, there's also the reference photo:

                            Ah ok, that explains it.
I did think maybe they had painted them but wasn't sure

                              Speechless... really great...
Just one thing catch immediately my eyes: the blur of ceiling textures, but you arealdy explain the reason and, as many years ago I've to so something similar, I can imagine the challenges you faced.
Except this, I think it's really really really great!

Probably the exteriors are not at the same quality level of the interior ones...but, come on... just some my personal envy

                              Just a pleasure to see.
