  • Flotation Units

    Hi all

Stuff from my day job: WIP images showing how to assemble flotation units in the water. The transparent areas of water were done in PS, post, to show the connectors under water.

Figures from Poser 4 - I've set up a few figures in Max with clothing textures and now all I do is import the Poser figures in 3DS format and use them as morph targets - works a treat!

    Comments welcome

That's pretty cool, however I don't like the guys.. they intimidate me, what with their posing and chest thrust forward in fight mode.

fake reflective caustics seems a bit large and angular.. are you using the smoke procedural as projector map?

    cheers.

They're Americans. They'll invade if you look at em funny.

Very nice! I really like the hand painted look you've given it. Nice.

We don't invade, we offer a helping hand from inside your country.

At least thats what Bush wants you and us to believe.

            Nice look.
Yeah, the guys look funny, but they usually do in instruction diagrams.

Biggest distraction is that nasty seam in the sky.

I like the style of these images.
The ankle of the character leaning down looks very wrong!

                Pretty cool..

Kinda curious about how they got there in the first place.

"good job men, we got them connected. mmm but we are still stuck in the middle of this damn lake. I was sure that conecting them would get us out of here"

                me = bored at work

Thanks for the comments, guys. Not perfect, I know, but I was pleased with the result (well, before I showed you lot I was ). As for the people, they're Poser characters. I always struggle with Poser people. I think the relationship between the proximity of the arms to the torso is directly relational to the size of the chest. Likewise with the bending of the knees and the size of the arse.

elektrosport: Caustics were done with Caustics Generator, not smoke map, but I agree they're a bit ill-fitting. These images were rendered hi-res for a brochure, didn't have time/resources for true VRay caustics. One day I will, I promise...

Night Render: believe me, there is no seam in the sky!

As for the content, this really is how they're built. We usually supply these to developing countries; they're cheap and quick to erect, but you will get wet!

Night Render: The units shown are not seaworthy, but for river barges and river-crossing ferries, they are a great idea since they're modular and can be linked in any orientation to create any plan area/shape (that's why i've shown a river and not the sea).

I haven't shown the later stages here. Other units are craned/floated in, pinned, and then propulsion units are fitted. The third image does not show the finished article:

Nice work. We attended an Autodesk Arch Viz user day in Trafalgar Square this summer where they showed off your work as an example of what can be done and how it improved your company's sales (of course, they omitted to mention you use Vray)...

I like the poser guys when they are further away as in the last image. I actually do illustrate CG malls (per your signature) and people are the bane of my life. We have 50 metropoly guys skinned and ready to go when we find the time, at the moment it's RPC. Don't get me started on those... Your poser method works very well I think.
