This has been a struggle in progress for a long time but I think I'm finally getting somewhere. View was chosen by the client and is hard to work with. Grass is scattered with forest pro and then converted to proxy.

Very nice. Like the lighting. The view is interesting, as stated. The grass is very nice and possibly could have been done with VrayFUR. The needles on your Fir tree are massive. Are the Onyx? They look like furry arms. I do see the necessity though, as if they were regular size there would be a lot of polys. I think that is the only thing I can see that is striking. Great job. Love the bark especially the birch trees.
Thanks. Rendering times are pretty horrific. 12 hours @ 1280x1024 on an athlon 3000+ w/ 1.5GB, "low" imap preset. Each fir tree is 1 million faces (proxied and instanced) and the grass is about 4 million faces (also proxied and it extends all the way around the house for other views) Plus the aspens, terrain, house... Yuck.

It might help to break up the grass into multiple objects, and have a different scene for each view. That way, only the grass for that view is in the scene. Should help rendertimes.
Same with all your other objects, only keep the ones in the scene that you need for that view. If you try to get everything in one scene, you'll go crazy (and bring your machines to a screeching halt.
The fir trees are actually really tall and you only see the bottom 1/4 here but the whole trees will be visible in other shots plus they need to cast correct shadows. The grass is what's really killing the render time because it's not instanced. I tried a script mentioned in a recent post that scatters proxies but it did not work in scattering a zillion instances needed here. So there is 6 forest pro forests proxied and I can turn off areas not in view but that doesn't seem to help much.

Quite nice image, but 12 hours render, i dont ever have time to use that much time to render, rendertests must be hell.
Perhaps try and switch to vray fur for grass, and imageplanes for trees for shadows and reflections in the windows.
-if your not aming at animation.
Maybe add a little detaille to the topright corner, the image seems to fall towards the left.
Sorry if I sound negative, but thought a little critique wouldt be ok.

that grass is very nice, the shadows falling on it are great.
Is the grass (and trees) included in gen/rec GI in the Vray properties? Have you tried lighting it without GI? might help the render time. Also AA settings might help speed things up a bit.
If you get this speeded up (or if render time is not a huge consideration) then I wouldn't mind seeing some more foreground to really push the perspective, ala Frank LLoyd Wright.
Thanks. Yes the grass is included in the GI. This project was partly a test to see how much I could push my system with proxies and push the detail threshold. The render time is not acceptable for everyday work but this is an unusal shot and I feel lucky that it rendered at all. The project is pretty much out the door now but I'll experiment more when I have time.
