  • Work In Progress - need suggestions

This is a work in progress, but i could do with some suggestions to improve it. Problem is that the client has specified all the furniture and colour schemes, so our hands are tied a bit on what we can change.

I should point out this is a frame from an animation, it hasn't been worked up as an image, so things like the plant being a bit off shot - the plant is in the corner of the room and will be picked up by other cameras. There are also details you don't see in this shot like a plasma screen on the wall.

Render time is about 50 mins including Lcache and Irradiance map calculation - these aren't final settings - anti-ailising needs to be increased, as does the final light solution. Also, the image has been automatically compressed by the hosting service - it's pretty bad.

it's just a bit empty maybe? Some smaller details - i'm not sure what.

    Looking good so far SV.
There seems to be something funny about the image. like it has been stretched vertically. Maybe is the scale of the sofa compared to the dining room chairs. I cant put my finger on it.

to me it looks like the camera sits far too low...how does it look if you move it up to eye level?
some more details would be nice too.

and the couches seem to be glued to the floor, some sort of gap might help.

A picture or 2 on the walls? I think it looks good so far.. Not fond of the DOF, but that could just be me.

carpet - vray 3d displacement, edge length of 6 pixels
Your right about the sofa, we'll move it up a bit.
We'll make some ammendments and try and post some more shots.
            Cheers.

              Hey. Some crits to help:

              1) Sofa looks like plastic - too much glossy. An ass would stick to it.
              2) Sofa scale looks off compared ot chair behind it.
              3) Floor panels look too big making sofa look too small. Rug/carpet height/displacement should be smaller.
              4) can you readjust lighting or add some light coming from left-hand side reflecting on plain right wall?
              5) can you add curtains to windows for added detail?
              6) You could add electrical outlets and some switches.
              7) I agree about the camera height. It's an akward viewing angle.

My thoughts are that the image looks like a photo of a little tiny plastic model. I love depth of field, but I don't think it works at all well here - it just makes everything look miniature.

agree about depth of field making everything look like minatures - i think the floor has a lot to do with this. We'll adjust and update soon.

                  Thanks for all crits.

Thanks to anyone who helped crit this; your comments really helped progress this.

I've reduced the depth of field in the background so it's only present in the fore-ground. I think this helps remove the "minatures" effect.

All these frames are taken directly out of the animation - they could be better quality, and have more dynamic camera angles if they were images, but for animation we needed them to render in under twenty mins for 720x576 so the scenes aren't overly detailed.

Much better There's a few things I'd change but you definitely got rid of that miniature feeling.

Nice stainless steel btw - settings?!?!?

overall the images look good - really nice lighting feel, but for me the sofa really is letting down the image - it looks as if it's made of cheese and it's melting in the sun or something! - no offense meant!

i'd recommend changing the material or change the sofa for something a little plainer perhaps? perhaps just my personal taste though...

something still looks a bit out of scale but i can't put my finger on it...
