Thought I'd start the year off with my first image post here. Hopefully there will be many more to come!

I've just taken the leap from fulltime emplyment to going freelance fulltime.

    Crits and comments actively encouraged.

(ps ignore the fencing in the background.... waiting on some details from the client before fixing it up. )
    Many Thanks
    Patrick

Nice start to the new year.
I like the overall style and desaturated/earthy tones.

Only problems I can see are:
        1. Glass seems a bit flat and dull.
        2. Lack of specular highlights, especially on hard metallic surfaces.
        3. Footpath and road have the same bitumen material. Footpath needs to be concrete or some other material, unless this is standard practice where you live.

          all around, very nice -

there seems to be some excess bounce from the top surface of the overhangs above the doors. unless that material is a brushed metal or something pretty reflective...

          cheers

Yea, I'm still waiting on the details for the overhang aswell so haven't got round to calming down the light bounce.

Nice start to the new year.

Thanks, I was worried I was over doing the diffuse glow... Colour balance/control is something I always feel least happy with in my work.

            1. Yep, I think I need to boost the blue-ness of the sky reflection. I also removed the subtle bumpmap on the glass to warp the reflections... I might reinstate it and see how things look.

            2. Good point, again maybe this is down to a weak reflection map in the vray- environment slot.

            3. hmmm another good point. I'll get in touch with the client to check their specifications. Either way, I agree it would look better with a lighter concrete material.

Great images. Do not really like the stiff person.....but the people always cause problems! What are you using for the bushes? Onyx? Ordered it Friday and eagerly awaiting its arrival!

                Thanks,
Yep, they are onyx I've gone all out with the leaf shader, well beyond what is required.... I'm just seeing how realistic a foliage I can create. Leaves are all setup with sss so that shadows appear on the backface of the leaf. Overkill I know

I remember there is a more render-efficient method of getting shadows to appear on the backface of an object without sss, but I can't remember how to do it. Any ideas?

Its either that or using a standard map and using self illumination.
                Many Thanks

I've used various combinations of SSS, simple translucency, self-illumination, top/bottom material, and falloff (relative to World Z-dir).

Depends how close you'll get, whether you're above, below or level to tree, and whether you're animating.
