Just some reasearch I did into motion blur. Animation needs work as well as lighting, couldnt get the thing to cast caustics for some reason. But I was after that stripe blurred effect when the coin spins really fast and I think I got it for the most part

There are, as you say, some tech issues, but still a GREAT idea for a MB torture test. Would love to see the caustics, area lights, even GI tests. Maybe even some dome light tests.

thanks chris, I will be working on getting caustics from this thing.... plus the fixes...
however this concerned me, because coin spins so fast that it needed 20 geometry samples in motion blur, which would be crazy if there were like 10 of them spinning at one time, just wouldnt be enough memory to calculate them all...

no displacement, all modeled. If displacement was present it would be heavy. 20 geo samples are for motion blur because coin spins so fast that you need a lot to show correct motion blur in frame.

Looks like 20 motion blur samples to get enough smoothness on the rotation of the coin rather than displacement samples.

What were the frames taking to render?

Was the animation hand keyed?

dejavu, animation is reactor dynamics with initial velosity from key frame.
Frames to render approximatly 20-45 min with qmc for gi and very high sampling, to get the motion blur the way it is.

This is true, but I am not sure if the BSP tree calculates it as 20 individual pieces, but as 20 instances of it.... similar to instance rendering. But I may be wrong as that method would not work for deforming objects. Maybe something to ask Vlado about.

and I have recently actually. However I noticed that when setting geometry samples quite high and doing a serios render most of the time vray bugers out...so something to think of.

Slightly less pretty but again a motion blur hell test - http://www.joconnell.com/stuff/dodgy_mblur.mov - its a sphere animated along a path to do light pen / slow shutter stuff...

Thats pretty cool.

I guess you could also do it with a path follow and a cylinder that has plenty of height subs and use the stretch spinner to get the same effect... would probabaly be a little easier on the render times as well
