  • My first image with V-Ray

I thought I would post the first image I did while playing with the V-Ray Demo, before I bought the latest version.

My 5 year old son is addicted to Legos, and he creates some amazing creations (beyond daddy's pride)

While on vacation he created a couple quick models that I thought I'd try and model in SU. Since then I've started to create a library of Lego pieces to help speed up the process of taking his models and recreating them in SketchUp. Here is the SU version of the first one we did.

    And the V-Ray Demo version:

The clear plastic material needs work, but now that the vacation is over I don't have much time to work on it now that I know more how to use V-Ray. I'll get some more images up soon.

I believe you can export from ldraw to dxf, which would let you bring the ldraw pieces into max

OH, WAY COOL! My son will be really excited to see that, maybe he can learn that one too. He's already working with SketchUp, and doing some pretty neat buildings.

Just curious, does anyone else you SketchUp for their modeling tool? I do mainly architectural models so I start everything in SU, and then move it over to Max for touchups and VRay for rendering.

          CSX -

My office uses SU for some preliminary modeling. I think it works great, but going from MAX to SU (for me) is like going from a computer to an Etch-a-sketch - the user interface is a little too rudimentary...

For the high end modeling we go straight into MAX with Vray...

i loved lego as a kid, LDraw might rekindel my old passion. Kind of funny how one generation was building lego physicaly but teh next may be doing it comlpetly virtualy.

The Lego Group, which has been offering Lego packages with robotic wizardry for several years, opened a Web site this summer called the Lego Factory, where children can design their own Lego models using a 3-D graphics program that is downloaded to their computers.

Many people in my office are familiar with SketchUp, but I'm the only one who knows VIZ (not well though.) Anyways, I've been working with another recent college grad to use her modelling abilities in SU with my rendering DISabilities. Anyways, I found that going from SU into AutoCAD via a 3D export worked best for us. If you go straight to 3DS from SU then the modelling can get screwed up, but if you go into CAD you can still retain all your layers, groups become blocks and then groups again when you import into MAX/VIZ. It's incredible what you can do with a simple SketchUP model in VIZ (with Vray of course.)

nice lego creation; i'm impressed that was done with just the demo version.

                  Cool renders

I made some lego renders ages ago.. in brazil beta days. The program I used was Leocad http://www.leocad.org/
Cool little program, has a HUGE library of lego parts. But was a little awkward to move stuff around in.

But this is what i made (note, rendered with Brazil)

I had intended to model the Lego Technic 8448 http://isodomos.com/technica/index/8400/8448i.php but i never got around to i.
I did however manage to find and download the entire instruction book for it. So im gonna give it a shot one day

t'was actually my GF who really like the 8448 and wanted me to buy it for her, but at the time the only place i could find it was on ebay.. and they were asking mega $$$ for it. So I told her I would try and model it for her, as it turns out I never got around to it.. LOL would have been some seriously long hours tho.

heheh yeah i think a lego challenge would certainly be interesting

Yes, that would really be a nice idea, though I think Metin will beat us all, he has a good experience in that toy kind of renderings.

Anyway, we can vote for the challenge idea.

Alex, thanks for your comments on SU. I've tried all the export options, but for us we prefer the straight 3DS format. We're not big AutoCAD users, don't need that kind of information for real quick models and renderings. But we're extremely happy with SU, as our main modeller. Most of the more natural objects we still do in Max for it's modelling abilities, but most architecture can be done so fast in SU... and Modified! You know, just in case the designer/client changes something, like that ever happens...

I believe I know exactly what your talking about with the messed up modeling, and have actually done some research and testing into it. My results at first pointed to how SU exports to 3DS; after more tests and better equipment, it appears the modelling problem is within SU itself. I've put forth all the information, files, etc. to the guys at @Last, but they ignore that part of my emails, and say 'A lot of people have videocard problems' OH PLEASE!

If only more companies would take resposibilities like Chaos seems to do. Did I mention I really enjoy V-Ray?

Off of the Legos, but still a V-Ray rendering. Here's the first rendering I did with the full version. With modeling done in SU first.

This model was for a private residence in the Atlantic City area. Because I wanted to use V-Ray for rendering, I modeled the siding instead of using a texture map.

                            And the V-Ray Rendering:

                              Thats pretty cool.
Did you ever get around to finishing it.. textures and the like?
Or is it still a current project?
