  • Pure PPT

Just a test scene. I was curious to work with ppt again. And with the trick Vlado mentioned (backburner, blend hdr). I also wanted to test how minimal a lightsetup can be with ppt. For that rendering I used just the vraysun and the vraysky. No area lights in front of windows etc. All I did was to switch to exponential color mapping (4/4). For me it´s somehow like
using a f-stop / shutter speed / ISO (yes yes, maxwell words).
I rendered the image with a few machines (6 machines 3ghz HT). Each machine produced 2 images that i blended together. The 12hdr images took 8h altogether.
Still noisy (especially left side) and I know Maxwell got better in terms of time/quality....but still i think ppt is a real option and should be more in a focus and to be improved. There is also no post or noise reduction on that image. Pure rendering...

@vlado... is it still better to use area lights in front of the windows ?

actually the quality of that render is not that famous....but for NO real lightsetup the reslut astounded me. this is why i posted. just a vraysun and that´s it. no "area light beamer" in front of the windows, no tweaking...nothing.... place the sun, hit ppt render and done...

Very good result, but, are you really sure that your résult is due to PPT, I'm not sure IMO, may be the sun or ....
Your leather is great, could you say more on it please

hehe, right...maybe it´s a bit of all. not just ppt. but with lighcache and qmc or irradiance map the result look less like that....especially the left part stays too dark without tweaking etc....the behavior of that rendering above was more like in..ähem..ma...max...maxwegjhgsjh ...can´t say it
and my testrendering in "the engine with the m" looked VERY similar. ..actually all i wanted to say with that posting is: vray is even in setup as simple (if wanted) as maxwezftrioeoĂ¼ ..you know, that spanish thing. maybe it does not make sense to compare vray to maxwell, but for me it was just for fun (did i say maxwell ? wow)

leather ? just a falloff (fresnel) with 5 as black and 120 as white. 0.67 glossiness.

@morbid...that fancy little tool vlado uploaded. can´t remember the name of the thread. it´s very useful and it works very well. the single hdr looked much more noisy. blending all 12 togther lead to the shown result.
still not very clean, but okay for a start

There's a free version on Herman Miller's web site, along with all HM/Vitra's design classics.
