  • First Interior (again)

    Yes, it's this one again. It's been kinda sitting on the backburner, and I need to get it out!

    I've attached a reduced version of the full render, as well as full size snips of the worst problem areas. (Ignore the buckets with missing textures - I already caught that ) My main concerns are the splotches, the bright spots, the noisy materials (like the fireplace).

    As for lighting, there is a direct light (sun) outside, a vraylight plane outside each window, and another one behind the camera for front fill.

    The main problems I have seem to be in areas that are dark or receive only bounced light. Are these problems with materials, light settings, or render settings?

    Thanks for any help!

      Ok...

      I reworked a bunch of materials and re-rendered, this time QMC+LC. The image is darker overall than it was with IR+LC, although it is a much better solution. Is this normal with QMC?

      Also, the image is quite grainy. What controls that?

      First image is reduced with a background added in PS, plus desat and some level adjustment. Second image is fullsize and unedited.

          Yes. Veeeeeeery slow. Nice idea though.

          Ok, here are the latest results.

          This first image is a fullsize snip of a 1500px wide render I ran overnight. It got about 50% done before I stopped it. It is QMC+LC, and looking much better. Render time is way too high though, and it's still grainy. If I'd let it go, it would have been about an 18 hr render. Much too long for this size image.
          QMC=80
          LC = 1000 / 0.01

          The second image is the same as the first, except I used IR+LC. This is very similar to the QMC version, although the solution is smoother - but you have to look real close to notice. Not terrible, but it projected a 70 hr render! Whoa! These are the settings I had to use to get a smooth GI that also had defined edges (for example at door trim and picture frame steps)
          IR= -3 / 1 / 70 / 30 / 0.2 / 0.1 / 0.1 / 0.0
          LC = 1000 / 0.01

          Both use linear workflow (gamma correction mapping).

          Both have a single direct light, 3.0 mult, no decay, 20 subdivs.

          Both use default VRay GI environment, with mult set to 10.0 (All previous renders used the same sun, but vraylights outside each window.)

          rQMC Sampler for both: 0.85 / 0.003 / 8 / 1.0
          Both use adaptive QMC 1 / 4

          (Running two machines - both with dual AMD 2400s)

          I am open to suggestions. I'm shooting in the dark, and I've learned a lot, but there has to be a faster way.

            Very good, though I agree about the silly putty reference.

            I wouldn't even know where to begin modelling something like that! Where do you start? A box, a quad-patch.....?

                well...slow....yes...but really good results...and u can reduce the quality of the sampling and achieve a balance ratio between desired quality/time....i really think is the way to go....
                i have got really excelent results....with less adjustments...
                nevestheless i think there are some double faces problemas in ur windows frames....

                  Here is an update. (Thanks to Morbid Angel and Lele for tips with the settings)

                  It is much faster, but still too slow I think. (2h45m for 800x600 with 2 machines DR)

                  Also, still pretty noisy for me.

                  Here is the image. Full size. Bkgd added in PS. Did a little sharpening, and a lot of levels since the image was so dark.

                  Opinions?
