  • woodmodel

    Hi guys!

this is my first attempt at making an oldschool woodmodel in Vray. The wood material was made really fast and could probably be alot better, and the mapping is tiling here and there... but other than that, what do you think?? any suggestions on making the images better are most welcome!

the model I used is from a project I did a few years back, so I havent built the whole model to look like a woodmodel... I just took the old one and applied a woodmaterial to everything except the glass.

oh btw, the trees were made with the particle spline tutorial thingy.

yes, it really is very nice.. but hoenstly, I can't help but thinking, what's the point of this (besides curiosity)? building a model of a model?

These (indeed old school) wooden models are usually made upon request from a client, and are used to show off the architecture at exhibitions or public hearings etc.

These models are usually a more expensive cousin of the models built for competition purposes. The cheaper models are used for model shots rather than showing off, as they're usually quite crudely built.

Anyways, this unprovoked rant aside, it's really well executed and neat looking but I have to admit, I would have been more impressed had you actually built a wooden model.

first of all, thanks for all the kind words! glad you like it!

flino2004 - it was actually your thread "Updated: Wood, cork, Glue & Vray" that inspired me to try this, so thanks =)

electrosport - I made it simply beacuse I thought it would look cool, thats all. But... I do think this style can be a good choice sometimes. If you make an illustration on an early stage of a project, where maybe colors and materials etc arent set, then i think its a good way of showing the volumes of a building and still be able to make the images look appealing.
not sure... Ive sent these images to a few of my clients to see what they think of them. If they like the style Id be very happy to make a couple of projects this way, cause its much more fun that trying to mimic reality imo.

unprovoked rantings are most welcome btw its good to hear others opinions!

              thanks

                Nice work Skogskalle.
Some minor issues, but it do ive a sense of small scale. Perhaps a little more work on the lighting would seel it. I notice that photographic shots of models tend to have very dark shadows and blown out highlights, which is lacking in your renders. The lighting looks a little too uniform and greyish.
                But it's nice work anyway.

As for the point of the exercise, I often use these types of renders to get sign off on the model without client being distracted with slapped on textured. They add interest without losing focus on the architectural model. And sometimes a render like these are more useful than a completely white model.

aha!- but you are mimicing reality...just the reality of a small balsa model...which you've done rather brilliantly i must say

This kind of presentation is pretty effective...specially for PROPOSALS, presentation (city, neighborhood meetings)...the reason why, is because is a abstract model then everybody pay attention to the design instead to the materials. The impression is the proposal is "subject to change" ...with photorealistic renderings you have a risk..somebody can be disappointed just for the colors buy they say "I don't like the project".

I've seen this situation several times...believe me, sometimes is better show abstract model first.
