I also did a try on caustics with my own small scene, but got only ugly results. Dunno what I might have done wrong. Maybe the Caustics multiplier is misscaled?

I'm glad for any help for a better understanding.

    Done with: 3ds max 9 and V-Ray 1.5RC3

Here's my scene for reference: http://www.tobyatwork.de/3d-worxx/caustics/pool.rar

You had the direct light casting light into the scene as well. Fixed that and a few other things

Ah -- compared it with my scene now and found the things mattered.

Within Direct01, affect Diffuse and affect Secular needed to be turned off, as well as the cast-shadows option.
After that, I was able to reduce the Caustics subdivs down to 1500 again.

        Two questions in addition...

        - You maybe noticed the small "splotches" (dunno the english word, 'cos I'm german ) within the caustics? - How can I get rid of them?
        - Is there any info on how to set up the amount of 'Search distance' within caustics rollout, or is it a try'n'error-way?

        here the marked "splotches"

I think the "splotches" your seeing are just variation in shadow and light at the bottom of the pool. Im not really seeing anything out of the ordinary.

Well search distance depends on your scene size and a few other factors, like caustics photon count. Its a little trial an error yes, as it also depends on the object thats casting the caustics.. as in the resulting caustics distribution.

Thank you for your help, DaForce

This is, what I came up with:

clicking on that image shows the .mov-animation sequence

I found the reason, why it was a bit "splotchy" in some areas. The Catmull-Rom antialiasing filter caused the splotches. Using "Area" filtering, I was able to get rid of this small but ugly effect

                Caustics look good
The water animation looks a little odd tho.

                  hehe -- that's right
I only kept an eye on caustics and not on the animated noise.
