  • Mercedes Benz CL-Coupe Configurator Online

    Hi,
we recently finished the "ZoomColorator" for the new CL-Coupe form Mercedes Benz. It's the first time this is done with CG instead of photos.
To be able to zoom in the 36 exterieur images were rendered at 8 k. The interieur was rendered at 15 k!
We rendered the silver coat, all other paints were colored by the web company.
You can have a look here:

Although it's in german i bet you will find the right buttons

    Best Regards,

    Dieter

Yeah, I agree, looks great. It would be really cool to create an animation with all the custom possibilities of the model, rims changing before your eyes, all sort of colors...just like an intro for the user...u get the idea

did you think about, or do you have the ability to incorporate AJAX into your app? That would make the zoom transistions seamless! If not, you should explore it.

Beautiful rendering though, and overall great job!

AJAX does not mean seamless image transition. They are using Flash, AJAX would just mean that the could have done away with Flash. What they would need to do with an AJAX solution to generate smooth transitions can also be done with Flash. They just chose not to. I think it probably could have been optimized substantially, but the developer is probably more of a WYSYWIG Flash developer instead of relying on Actionscript 2.0 codingl.

ok, jeeze. Didn't mean to upset anyone. I'm not bashing flash. Just a suggestion. Furthermore, you can speed image transition with AJAX. i.e. Google maps.

You didn't upset me. I'm just a web developer, and the term AJAX is thrown about too lightly without understanding what it is. They are using an AJAX-like methodology, in that they're doing a request from the server for images that get loaded, not pre-caching the data. What is different from the AJAX model is that they are using Flash instead of HTML and Javascript. We can't tell if they are using a database on the backend, or if they are using XML over HTTP requests (which also is required to actually be "AJAX" and not just some fancy Javascript).

The smoothing of the transition in an AJAX solution is enirely within the realm of the Javascript portion, and as such, doesn't require an AJAX solution to implement. The same smoothing effect can be done in Flash as well, for the same amount of work.

right-o. I should've said: "did you explore any caching or preloading techniques, as it's a bit choppy in transitioning" rather than assuming that such a solution would only be achieved by ajax. You're right, ajax is the buzz word right now, isn't it? I was unaware of a similar technique in flash. I'll explore that.

tho i wasnt directly involved in this project, rest assured that the webdev wasnt done at MV, hence dont blame the crew for bad web-tech or compression :P
