a Yamaha snare drum

A Yamah snare. I have tried to use the vray dof of the vray camera but nothings happend is there something one should know about it. The 3ds cam works OK.

I think this would look much cooler with no DOF

I'd say scrap the DOF for this.

For future referance though, are the 3 grids that appear when you select the camera there to show the DOF limits? lower the f.stop to 3 or 4 and see if it starts working.

Roppin, for DOF you need to make sure you turn on DOF at the bottom of the camera rollout, and NOT use the DOF in the render panel as it wont work.
