Looking for suggestions on this one. I have been working on all my Mat's but have yet to get a good roof to work for me. I think I have my siding down but any suggestions are more than welcome.

I was thinking curtains would tie things in better?

    Thanks

Try modeling the roof, ive never seen a flat textured one that I felt worked without displacement.

I've had good results on cedar shake roofs using something like this in displacement:

Its a tile map with tiled gradient map. This will make the outer edge of the tiles higher than the inner edge.

It looks like the biggest problem with your roof is the angle of it to your camera. There are three things you can try in combination if you do not want to add the cost of rendering extra model or displacement. I have put them in order of effectiveness.

        1. You might just try adjusting the blur on the bitmap(s) that you are using. It defaults at 1.0. Start at 0.1, and if that is too much for your antialiasing to handle, go up until it looks alright.

        2. If it is a VRay Material and you are using a bump map, add some specular highlights to it. You do this by unchecking "trace reflections" in the options tab of the VRayMtl, then setting up the material to reflect as if it were a somewhat shiny plastic. Do some quick render tests and adjust the reflection amount until the highlights look correct. You will probably want a similar viewing angle as you have with your camera now when you are doing the tests.

        3. Change the filtering on the bitmap(s) to Summed Area as opposed to Pyramidal(default). It costs more ram at rendertime, but I don't think it will matter with this scene and on only one material.

I like the siding material. I do not think that adding curtains would hurt the rendering any. I feel that the appeal of a rendering comes from the amount of detail put into it, be it lighting, modeling or texturing.

        Nice work

Thanks for the input thus far... I have a few updates coming that I think are an improvement, but keep the comments coming I think I will link to some hirer res images as they show a bit more detail than the one posted above.
          Thanks

            ** Update**

            http://www.mandmcr.com/New_1_copy.jpg

I am a bit happier with the windows, showing blinds and the curtains and a reflection, but I am still working on the interior to be light up a bit more. I am also starting to dabble with a new roof Mat... Hopefully I will be able to see some good results.

Note: I was wondering If anyone would be willing to check out this setup and either play with the actual max file and set up the lighting or maybe give me a few pointers for 1.5?
            Thanks
