  • "Gravity is overrated"

    Hello Guys,

After i was placed in the "Digital art masters" book vol 1 i was asked if i wanted to place something else for the vol 2 book wich is coming up. I wanted to create something new since i haven't gotten alot of private work done lately with all the normal work being done.

So..... i started a new scene... since i had some time constraints i wanted to make something simple yet try to create a nice scene. I got an idea of some windmills and other objects bending, tired of work (dont ask me how ). After some work i showed my rough concept to a friend and he came up with the current title "gravity is overrated" wich i kinda liked.

I made it with 3dmax 9 and the new 1.5 vray and some photoshop for postprocessing. I really like well lit places and the bright scenes i make reference that. Other than that it kinda speaks for itself.... several techniques were used for modeling and the grass consist of (15.000) scatter objects.

I wanted to make a semi realistic render so it was not my main issue to realy work out the details in textures like dirt etc... This also gives this scene a sort of clean look wich i liked (sorta like product illustration)

Well that is all the info i guess.... if there are any questions just ask....

Have fun and hope you like it.

    Greetings,

    Niels Sinke

This is a great image. The contrast of colors make everything in this image "pop." Good work.

Why is the grass standing up?

hehe i know about the grass i tried several aprouches also with the max hair plugin but with all attempts i got my max crashed and i had to be rather quick about it.... besides i kinda liked the effect the gras got me although it is standing up.

I figured.... it doesnt matter to much

I love it, well done! If I were to give one nitpicky criticism, like the kind I get from my more painful architect clients -- the shadow cast from the first windmill over the road is a bit distracting... it's so narrow that it almost reads as a break. Maybe lighten it a bit or blur the edges so it's not so harsh?

Outstanding work though, I must say. Good luck!

Really nice image. Love the grass and road texture-care to share how you did the grass? The only things that stand out that I don't like are the crack on the foreground turbine (it looks too jarring and the pier would probably have a sharp bend there-like it without it) and the thickness of the sign in the foreground (too thick).
                  www.dpict3d.com - "That's a very nice rendering, Dave. I think you've improved a great deal." - HAL9000... At least I have one fan.

I really like how you blended in the sand on the road, and the general feel of the image.
I was struck by how much green reflects off the turbine fans. Should the GI be that strong on them?

                            Nice and original.
its almost got that Salvador Dali / freaky dreams look to it.

hehe thnx guys...... guess toms remark about Salvador Dali must be the biggest compliment to me since he is an master with the freakish weird cool scenes.

                              dlparisi:
The road texture is a big texture wich repeats itself.... the road itself is an loft abject so all i had to do is make the road texture repeatable in length and since its quite far away after one repeat i could put some extra detail in.

The grass is a gras texture from the 3dtotal cd but i copied it alot of times to get a good thick grass texture. After that i made a cylinder and deleted topand bottem polygons and gave it a taper. Then all i had to do is scatter the object. I used 4 scatters where 3 of them are over the whole area and consist of about 3500 scatter objects each and the last one is more closer to the camera with an total of 5000 scatter objects. I also gave the different scatters different collours to get a more natural look.

hope that explains it a bit.... only drawback with this method is that flatting the grass (like the rest also is bent etc) was very difficult or didnt get me a nice grass result... i also tried other methods but my pc didnt handle max fur/hair and vray fur very well.

                              Greets,

                              Niels
