"That's a very nice rendering, Dave. I think you've improved a great deal. Can you hold it a bit closer?"
        www.dpict3d.com - "That's a very nice rendering, Dave. I think you've improved a great deal." - HAL9000... At least I have one fan.

          Such a good film

It's such a good film - a bit of 2001 trivia I learnt in school you might not know - HAL stands for IBM, all the letters have been moved one letter backwards in the alphabet. The song HAL sings as he is dying - Row, Row, Row your boat - were the first words ever spoken by a computer - creepy

          Thanks for you kind words.

Actually, the song was "Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer please"

Not really explained in the movies, but in the books it's much clearer. It's a system of computing/transportation nodes left behind by a super advanced species millions of years ago to observe planets with the potential for advanced life.

The one with the monkeys was put in place to encourage a breakthrough in human evolution. The one on the moon was put in place as a marker signal to alert the system that we had advanced to the point of rudimentary spaceflight. The one by Jupiter to prove that we had interplanetary spaceflight (and make the first human contact by letting Dave go through it). The one by Jupiter and HAL have additional roles in the later books.

Thanks a million for your help

Thanks a million for your help on this, I was going crazy with the crashes from the large HDRI. Yeh I got the songs mixed up - that's what too many late nights will do to yah -

Thanks for all your compliments. I will have to work on something less shiny for my next Gallery post - that's all I seem to be being these days.
