  • Architectural Anim with VRayToon

Here's an animation we just completed using VRayToon in the final render to give it a more crisp look to it.
It was all a bit rushed but we are generally happy with the way it turned out.
    Comments welcomed.

      Hi Vu,

I really like the mix with the toon shader. I was wondering what the building was going to look like there. It will improve the area a lot.

      Great job as always.

      Chris.

well done. toon-shader works great for this.
is the sky with its moving clouds done in post or rendered?

Great work overall ! I love it, espacilally the toon effect which is not used enough by the community

My only crits are the resolution of the sky (anyway, it's cool seeing it in movement) and the glass of the tower which is too blueish in my opinion (maybe it's called the blue tower ?)

Just a question, I LOVE the "bumped" reflection on the glass on the back side of the small white building. I've already tried to have this effect but never managed to it efficiently... Maybe you could make my day posting the specs ?

PS: are those ppl you put in the street from Sketchup ?

              Thats actually pretty damn cool.
              Love your lighting.
Care to explain your light setup? really warm.

However I dont like the sky, its really weird doesnt seem to move right at all.

nice work, looks great. using the toon shader for outlines looks cool - was it done on a separate pass and composited?

we use the same people for still - have you tried using their animated people yet? (we have them but just havnt used them yet)

Theres a lot of specific areas i like including the look of the roads and other siteworks - it all ties in very well. i also like the bump look to the glass so that the sheets arnt all even and perfect looking. I think the sky is very effective as well although maybe slightly weird as mentioned previously.

The only thing id say which is a personal preference is that the glass may be nicer if it was more transparent or else reflecting more rather than having such a strong fog? colour.

                very good though!!!

I am interested as to where the people were purchased. Could you please tell me where, they look really great. The animation is amazing also, I hope I am produced animations of this calibre in the near future!

Very impressive...It reminds me of that Car animation or something someone posted here a while back....It was like a car warehouse or something...Anyways....Love the camera movement.....Yes..Please explain your lighting....

                    Great stuff

                        Great animation!!!!

Are those AXYZ people? Did you do any tweaking on the materails...? Ive been trying to use them lately but I find some of the colors (ie. red) seem to burn out like a florescent color...... Anyone care to comment on using those people and texturing.

The overall texturing looks really good!!!!

I guess my only comment is about the glass elevator. I think it looks great, I just think the animation part seems to move too quick, someone might get hurt at those speeds!!! lol

Ill throw my hat in to find out what the lighting setup was.... Very warm and a nice feel...

How did you do the sky? I like it, i think its just moving to quick....

                        Nice work!

Thanks everyone for your positive comments and my apologies for the late reply - pretty crazy here at the moment.

For those wanting to know about lighting setup and glass material, scene can be downloaded here:
                          http://www.zaxis.com.au/downloads/milton.rar

CT: Thanks Chris. Being a local, you would appreciate it.
But whether it will actually end up looking like the 3D, only time will tell. There's a long way to go.

bluescreen2: Sky is just a cylindrical map animated by offsetting.

Pixelab: Agreed. Sky maps never tend to be big enough, unfortunately, it's all we had. As for the blue glass, that was the architect's spec I'm aftraid. It's a bit too blue for my taste too. I've uploaded a cut down version of the scene for you with the glass material in it.

DaForce: yeah, the moving sky was a last minute addition and there was no time to test is properly...probably moving too fast.

paulison: toon was rendered in-camera. we've used the animated people in the past, but the mocap data is often flakey. my preference is for still people...

                          Blittersweet:
the people are from AXYZ libraries. google them and you should get their website.

Arkitec: I find you need to tweak the materials on those models to get a pleasing result as some have very bright colours or are washed out. Are you using LinearWorkFlow? If so, try adding a ColorCorrect map with 2.2 gamma. That should help.
Hehehe..nicely spotted. It is going a bit fast - you'd get nose bleeds at that rate. Sky is just a map which is included in the file above.

Thanks again guys for your input and feedback.
                          Cheers,

Vu, very nice. What kind of settings did you use for your motion blur? What kind of render times were you looking at for that scene? Did you use QMC for primary GI because of the moving objects?
