  • exterior cc welcome and little bit of info about probs

Had a freakin nightmare with multiple crashes when using Disp. and rendering out at 1600px image.
Tried precalculating irmaps, LC with disp off (with no disp.) and then render with disp on and using saved maps, no luck,
    tried 2D disp- no luck
tried rendering to Vrimg -no luck
    tried DR- no luck

read through all the threads and it seems some people experiece this problem even with powerful pc and 64bit systems, I know its not a specific vray problem just that the machine runs out of memory, (Q6600, 4GB RAM, xp64) It will render out at 640x480 no problem but that is no use as I need a 1600px wide (minimum) image. Is there anything else I could have tried that could have prevented my weekend being ruined (maybe this should be posted in the problems thread but I am looking for cc on the image, I did manage to get disp on the driveway/grass using a seperate file and lots of PS work.

    thanks all,
    Tom

might be able to hide everything but the displaced object(s) and photoshop them in later

or use dynamic ram with 2 gb limit or so.

or buy more ram- i got 8gb because i felt it was needed for displacement effects.

        Nice image indeed...............!

Roof tiles look a little on the large side too.

I've had the same problem with my displament one time. I used a Displacement modifier on a roof and everytime I tried to render Max would crash.

When I turned off the Displacement override in the render dialog I never had to problem again. So check to see if that solves the problem.
I also increased the Dynamic Memory from 400 to 600.

I like how the image looks. I agree on the size of the bricks and rooftiles, and I think the reflection in the windows is a bit too much. But other then that it looks good.

              Strip Rendering

Can you explain strip rendering? I remember a rendering package I used to use that will render in defined quadrants. I can tell it to render the scene in 4 quadrants and it would divide the scene into 4's and render each out, assembling it at the end. Or maybe it was a dream.... anything like this available in max/v-ray

cheers guys, always good for a fresh pair(s) of eyes to CC it.

@glorybound, use backburner and you can choose strip rendering and define the height of the strip (width will always be the same as the overall width of the final image- easy enough to setup )

I did try it but I only split it into 2 strips, will try with something like 10 strips, while I am on the subject, I did strip rendering b4 and got hard edge lines visible on the created image, that corresponded to the strips and it took some PS work to clean it up, should I use the overlap option whn using strip rendering?

                cheers,
                Tom

With your question, you practically gave the answer
Yes you should use the overlap option.

I wouldnt bother with DISP on the driveway, it wont really be noticable with a texture like that. Bump may be good enough.

And if the surfaces you are displacing are flat (planes) and you are not using procedurals then stick with 2d with precision at 1. That will lower the memory a fair bit and render quicker.

I really like the softness to it. The lighting is really nice.

However it doesnt really match the sky, with such a clear sky you would assume there would be a strong visible sunlight. Your renders dont show such a light.

                          Whats your lighting setuo?

Yep, sun is placed at rear/side hence the softness

interesting lighting setup and very nice work!. the only comment is that maybe the pebbles look like a standard material and arnt picking up the shadowed areas properly (the low points of the pebbles) because overall it looks too evenly bright to me.

regarding displacement. We only have 2Gb ram on our machines and have frequent displacement issues. Vlado told us a while back to change the edge length from 4 to something like 6, and reduce the subdivisions from 256 to say 128 - you can change these in the "default displacement" section of the vray rendering settings. Sometimes this works for us anyway
