  • Super Dwelling :: Bentley Manor

    Recently completed works.

Geek fact: All the trees are modelled using Onyx, so no specific library. I have no idea how many hundreds and hundreds of millions of polys there are - we had to cut vista's through the wood so the only way to do this was to remodel the whole lot. Good god i love proxys. there are three montages at the end, where not all of the trees in the images are CG. We did model and plant all the trees on the estate though, and they are composited over the top, with some trees remaining just to add more density!

rendered stupildy quickly due to only one light source (VraySun and Sky), but did need a fair amount of memory, and could only really do this with 64bit.

                Very very well done!
                Great work!
Did you use opacity maps for the foliage?
                Thanks

                  hell no!
geometry is the only way....opacity mapping takes for ever and ever for a scene like this - it'd be a nightmare, your buckets would just slow down and stop. the render times for a 3500 pixel image were about 50 minutes.

The secret to much faster renders with opacity mapped leaves is to turn filtering and blur of on the opacity map.

I rendered a small golf course/putting green with around 50-100 or so trees ( cant recall ) and at NTSC resolution the render time was around 10mins I believe. So they are certainly usable.. just need a little tweaking first

nice work sv. One question...did you use vray dirt on ground that you have this browny dirty thing on ground around buildings?

yep, that's the one. renders so much quicker without filtering, but still pure geometry is faster i think, or at least more controlable in my opinion - you can do really quick test renders with really poor AA settings and not have to worry about also calculating the opacity. (At least when you combine glossy highlights and bump maps etc.)

lukx - no dirt, just GI. IR + LCache.

awesome use of materials. can we look forward to more interiors?
second Daforce... using the opacity w/o filtering or blurring makes for fast renders. I rendered a scene with over 11k instances of xfrog trees using the opacity method and the render times where in the minutes for tests and surprisingly fast for the final output at HD size.
