I did this just as an exercise in max. The inner dark tray proved very difficult. I had no clue what would be the best way to do it. Took me almost a week until I found the solution.

Anyhow, I have 3 VRayLights in the scene and, especially on the opened case, it's quite noisy. Even though all lights' sampling is set to 32 and I'm rendering using
IR: 50 subdivs - High preset
    LC: 1000

It took about 15 minutes on an AMD 4800 dual core. So at this point I'm ok with the noise. I don't know how to lower it without rendering it for half a day.

    and the wire...

maybe 3 lights is too much for this << Studio feeling >>

what about a HDRI. greater feeling light. More warm look, nicer effect for your clear plastic.

Maybe your plastic material too low glossiness. Seems to be a .8 from here.

What antialiasing are you using. What is the environment color, we need more infos to help you. Maybe you are too far away from the 0,0,0 in Max.

    by the way nice modeling.

What are the subdivs of your VRayLights? Maybe it's an idea to increase those. Standard is 8 I think. Increasing them to 20 might help.

I think the images look good though.

Well, the subdivs for the ligths were 32!!! However, I've seen the light last night (pun intended

I changed my LC to Brute Force, and I'm getting not only much smoother renderings, where the noise virtually disappeared, but much faster render times as well! Instead of 11+ minutes now I get around 4-5.

that's an amazing looking studio setup pentool.
could we see a wire of the setup, or would you be good enough to share?

          really great images.
I really like them - really nice balance, really soft and subtle and even.

          well done.

Here's the new rendering with re-configured setup using Brute Force as secondary (IM as primary bounce). The noise are GONE!

            Primary: IM - preset: High - HSp/Interp: 50/50
            Secondary: Brute Force (default settings)
            Caustics On: Default settings
AA: adaptive subdiv - Filter: Catmull-Rom
Instead of 3 VRayLights, I only have 1 now with 32 subdivs
            Rendertime about 7.5 minutes

sv: thanks for the comment! here is the screenshot of the setup. very simple.

I had 3 lights BEFORE. I cut it down to only 1 (as you can see on the wire).
