  • MAXER LIGHTHOUSE TEST

All, I took the idea of Maxer's all white light house and applied it to the model of my house I did a while back. I like the way it turned out...

I don't really like it. It's simply an ambient occlusion pass so all you pick up on are the interior corners between faces. Maxer's lighthouse appeared to have just a simple vray dirt map in the diffuse channel with white and black (or maybe grey) but it also had either a very large sun or large area light to give some shading to the surfaces. Looks like he also used some GI on it since the backs of the surfaces don't go completely black. Yours apears to be a vraylight mtl with a vraydirt map - great for generating ambient occlusion passes but not much else.

If this is the look your going for fine, but it doesn't look like the same technique as maxer.

well I think maxer used his vray dirt differently. He set it up so he could also use some lighting.

Darker backgroung could help - for instance a gray - white gradient, with gray on top and white on the bottom. That way the whole bouilding would be visible, if only as a silhouette.

            cheers!

all, I agree, Maxer's is much better. I've never used VrayDirt and was just playing around with it. I like the white background for this kind of look, makes it a little more like a drawing than a model. I wanted to get the same look as Maxer's but wanted the white background instead and this is where it took me. Just thought it was interesting and wanted to share...

I didn't mean to sound offensive or too criticizing - I really like this kind of images, and I think that Your's is great - with the details of the plants and all.
It's just that I kinda miss the whole silhouette of the building - the roof mainly.
But as You said - it was supposed to look like a drawing, and it most definately looks like one

You might have a look at this for a better look: http://www.chaosgroup.com/forum/phpB...ic.php?t=18072

Architects we've rendered for really liked this style.

@ palibebeh - not a problem. I didn't take it that way. I wouldn't have posted if I couldn't handle a little crit.. and yeah, losing the roof lines was a bit unexpected, but it kind of grew on me.. it actually looks good when printed on white paper - like the image below - this is what we are using for our cover of our portfolio...

(as an architect, I survived 4 years of professors making people literally cry in presentations .... so no worries..)

@ Gilpo - yeah, I saw that one a while ago and couldn't find it.. THANKS! I will try to render some other images with that material. I just love the minimalistic look to it.. I am not that good with the textures (yet) and this reminds me of the strathmore all-white models we used to make in architecture school (probably why the architects like it so much...)

I'll try again and re-post later this weekend...

by the way, on the inside cover of the portfolio, I have a series of images that lead from sketches, to the 3D image, to the real built house... (which is mine!) looks something like this...

And this is what it used to look like... (I did all the construction on the weekends over the past two years... I know its getting a bit off topic, but I am somewhat proud of the transformation..)
