  • Did i ever post these?

A montage that i did a while ago:

It seems that a lot of people liked it because it blends with the photo, but that itself is a problem, the overcast day makes everything blend so it's hard to tell what's actually going on in the picture.

It's even worse on the night shot.

Would you even try to do a montage in a photo like this or would you suggest for a different photo to be taken?

I would suggest a different photo. But then there's still alot you could have done with the glass in post. I can't imagine a client that would be happy with that image. Nothing against you, like you said the lack of directional light really blands up the image.

The insertion is nicely done, only the trees bertrays you.

But I would definately ask another picture or make the image without insertion with white surroundings...

they are excellent IMHO. fit very well into the photo's and give a good sense of context. My only crit would be that maybe the day time shot is too evenly lit or has been over brightened or something.

Some other views would probably be interesting...if you can get one where the building is framed by other buildings instead of everything overlapping. Not so front on maybe?

still, i think it looks pretty good...well done!

For me everything looks correct and I would change the trees on first image especially when you compare with the original scene trees

              Thanks for the comments.

The pictures were provided by the client, the first thing that popped to my mind was that it's going to be tough to montage something into it, but then instead of suggesting something else i posed this as a challenge to myself. In the end, i guess it's a good montage, because people seem to think that either the building is real, or that everything in the background is 3d as well.

I've tried some tricks to make the building stand out more in the first one but it still looks very dull and i'm kinda hesitant to include it in a portfolio. It seems that every architectural rendering has to have bridght sunlight, blue skies, lots of green, people, birds, etc.

Would you insist on a different photo, if were to say that they don't really care or that it's too complicated to get another one?

Would you try to get a decent one yourself, and then redo it for a portfolio?

Would you engage in heavy retouching, like, adding leaves to all the barren trees, changing the skylight, painting sunlight and shadow all over the image before you montage in the 3d object?

Id say yes to all those things. As a montage, its pretty spot on. By all means doctor up the background to something more visually stimulating if thats what it takes. Like I said before, the image the client gave you for the day is really just too bad. The night is better, but if they could have taken a couple different exposures, you could have removed some of that overbright areas around the parking street lights that really harm the image for me. Oh, and those black windows on the front of the building? Why not photoshop in some reflections of that orangish street in front of it? Would go along way.

All in all though, its a job well done, I hope I didn't come off harsh with my earlier comments. I just hate to see an image starting off with 2 strikes already due to its client provided background plates.
