  • My first post and project - improvement crits plz

    Hello all,

This is my first post here. Glad I can finally post something even though this render is a bit "boring".

Any siggestions on improving it are welcome. Be nice as I am rather new at this...

    Thanks guys & gals

    why the camera angle?
are they really going to have ONE colour for the whole building?
    better trees would be nice.

otherwise pretty good lighting, and nice grass.

Not bad. I would say your materials need abit of work.
The sky is a bit strange.

And i think the iamge would benefit from a different camera angle. So the store takes up more of the image. Otherwise you will need to fill in the empty space more.

Better tree's, check you leave sizes. they are are a bit large.

improving, i'd lower the camera to eye level.
put signage on the building since its commercial.

the sky is better but thats a lot of smog in the air for new zealand :P

                Hey Werticus,

Oh yeah i forgot to reset the camera height as it has been set to look over and past a car i was trying but the car is to high a polygon count and render time went through the roof! from 5 min to 45 min

And actually that is not enough smog if this image was in Christchurch..........:P

As to the signage, well that is why this is so boring as the client has not given me any

To many fires going to keep warm........LOL

                Cheers

if you put some materials on the building and maybe something in the store, your rendering will improve a lot.
and I am sure you can find better trees than that, there are plenty free ones to find on the net.

I doubt this issue was from poly count alone honestly. I have no problems rendering a 1million poly model with full gi and a default gray material in less than 45 seconds on a dual core e6600.

Try re-adding the car, and assigning it a default gray vraymtl and see how the render time looks. If it renders reasonably, it's the material, check the subdivisions on your reflections and make sure no raytrace materials/maps are used as this often causes vray to crash.

I would expect a job like this to take about 1-2 hours to render with good settings and at a resonable resolution. I think that is partly where you can improve this is to raise settings and resolution. 5 minutes per render will only ever give you a preview quality image i've found on a resonable detailed scene.

For cars and trees and people id be looking at libraries from sugar3d, evermotion and axyz respectively. there are other sources but thats a start!. If you use a lot of the same type of tree, definitely convert it to a vray proxy otherwise you will hit memory problems (especially if you use evermotion plants/trees)

For the building i think you may want to see less carpark, signage detail and at eye level with the camera closer in. If you wanted to add a lot more detail and the camera was close enough id consider lighting an interior scene through the glass.

Anyway hope some of those ideas help!

There are also plenty of free tree generators out there to play with. For an example, I still use Arbaro from time to time.
