i gotta say i dont like the colour and dark light balance.
the image looks in need of LWF.
the sky's depth + vignetting is too strong and gives a gloomy feel for what is otherwise a rather bright image
be very interested to see a LWF version of the same image.
besides that the only problem i can see is that the background image is blurred compared to the 3d trees which just looks wrong.
Also I don't believe our goal as 3d artists should be to achieve photo realism but rather human eye realism. As photo's are a flawed medium compared to the eye.
Werticus, you could make it look like that in LWF, its not that big a deal that he didnt use it and its pretty obvious that it was a style choice.
LWF is not the be and end all of everything and it doesnt suddenly make your images look 'better' - its a different way of working that happens to have well documented guidelines to follow.
I like the images, but for the photographic over contrast/abbration look its a little too saturated for my liking, and the mid-levels near the center of the images could do with picking up a little.
From what i remember of the old ones compared to these new ones, somewhere in the middle between the brightness and lacking contrast of LWF and the oversaturated darkness of this version would be about right for a finished product IMHO.
regardless of the method I think these images look good but just a bit dark, especially if you were considering printing them.
Maybe increase the bright multiplier, or secondary bounces or environmental light multiplier or sunlight and try some different colormapping options. All of these are options available regardless of what workflow is used. Another option would be to just play with exposure or shadow/highlights in post to lighted up dark areas.
