  • August Wilson Center finals

A while ago I posted some WIP shots of this project, I never got around to post the finals, so here it goes:

There was a lot of input from the client which resulted with a specific look to these images that is not necessarily the way i would have gone with them. I would like to hear some opinions.

I'm not sure why the ceiling clouds in the theatre are so different, they should be blue like the first one. I may have made a mistake when i was preparing it for the web.

But, i'm curious to know why exactly do you find them "cartoony"? The theatre ones really remind me of the old early 90s video games graphics. Although i wanted to make it illustrative and not too real, i'm not sure if i wanted them to be cartoony.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

ok maybe i lack some better word...but they came out well..not photorealistic imo! great given the fact that it was ur goal!
overall as i posted the colours semm too saturated and almost every single surface seems to lack some degree of reflection and specularity above all...

For an architectural CG rendering to be eye catching, it has to have a lot of tiny details and effects. Glossy reflections are probably the most interesting one. The problem that i've had here was that the actual materials used in the interior are supposed to be dull, if i may use that word. Very diffuse, and very plain.

Now I wonder, was this the most one could pull out of a design like this, or was unable to do it? I'm sure it would have looked better in terms of CG if everything was concrete/steel/glass.

Mind you, one more thing, a lot of the requests that were coming from the client were very unrealistic in terms of physical accuracy. Certain things had to be highlighted while others had to be almost hidden in comparison.
With this on mind, i wondered if these may have been to realistic for the task?

Bottom line, can you say that these are good illustrations, without saying that they are or aren't photorealistic?

nevertheless i think that the glass on the first image should be much more reflective and the wood panels on the second should be more specular, for example

unfortunately we share the same boat, at the end of the day it s dificult to steer into my personal goals as a cg artist as keep having to fullfill certain requirements for the clients and their multiple goals(marketing most of the times)...and at the end of each job i tend wonder if i have done it or not...

                        Thanks guys!

The musicians are the only people in there that are not 3d, i guess they fit in nicely

They were cut out from some of the images that we received from the clients.

nice. arranging the people must have taken a while? the effect is really good. it's something that i've tried to do on some projects, but i haven't developed it really far. are the people from got3d?
nice renders. theatre scenes look great.
                          nice project

They are from various libraries that we were able to get a hold of. Got3d, AXYZ and probably some lowpolygon3d.

As mentioned, how/where did you get the 3D people from? They really make the renders imo. I've seen one or two of the people. Can't remember the product range though.
