  • 90m yacht

Modelled this nice little 90 metre yacht for my portfolio (which needs some serious updating!).

Used Rhino to model everything on the yacht apart from the propellers which were done in Modo.

The vray toon 'sketch renders' turned out quite nice I thought. Comments and crits welcome

It looks REALLY nice! I want to learn to model boats in Rhino too. : ) If you ever find some extra time, a quick explanation of your workflow would be nice.
      Again, beautiful work!

Nice water material you have there!
Good looking model too. I wish I could get away from the standard ArchViz shit for a change...

pixelab - Thanks, hehe... I'm not very good at modelling French politicians, but wouldn't mind having a go at (modelling) Carla Bruni

SvantePanter - Thanks, what area would you like me to explain?

DrJan - Thanks, but remember - the grass is always greener on the other side... or as a work colleague once said to me... "same sh1t, different bucket...". Maybe we should do a job swap for while, you'd soon get tired of boats, I promise!

I'm quite new to Rhino. If I model let say a hull, I use Loft and maybe Sweep2rail. This way I can make adjustment with control points and adjust the design when the hull surface is created, and also Rebuild if there are too many control points. But if I join the hull with the deck/keel or whatever, or if I cut out holes for windows, it becomes a polysurface, and I can´t really shape it like I did before. Maybe you first have to decide how the hull design should look, and then move on with the rest?

Are you just doing boats then? If so, your colleague is right

SvantePanter - sounds like you're pretty much there, best to leave all the fillets, details and trimming untill after you've got the basic shape. Unfortunately Rhino isn't a parametric modeller (although they are starting to implement parametrics to a small degree), so if you are after a fully adjustable model it'll probably be best to look at Catia or Pro-E. I always cry tears of despair when someone mentions modifications to my rhino models...

DrJan - Yep, just boats, boats and more boats... would be nice to do a building for a change, although if it wasn't pointy at one end and flat at the other then I'd be in trouble!

Could see if frank gehry is hiring visualisers?

Very nice renders, by the way. The only real crit ive got is that while the sea looks very good, with how wavy it is, it's all the same - there would be more variation in bump over a large scale.

hehe... yeah, old Frank doesn't like straight lines does he!

Not too sure what I could do to get more variation in the water though. Maybe apply some displacement to the mesh? Trouble is the mesh is so big I run out of memory pretty fast (only 32 bit here.... ). Perhaps I could work some more bump maps in there. Will give it a go for next time.

Just finished the owners suite of this yacht and tried to do an interior/exterior evening scene. Let me know what you think!

very nice exposure on that last shot! you nailed it
though the reflections on the "ceiling" look a bit extreme imho!
