  • Trying to get closer to Photo Realism

This is the model from this thread:
    http://www.chaosgroup.com/forums/vbu...ad.php?t=41197
The Brazil V2 vs V-Ray speed test.

Not a speed test, but a photorealism test in this case. I am trying to see how to make an image more photo realistic, what could be done to make these babies look more photo realistic? Any thoughts?

This is just a test using the toon environment:

It doesn't seem to like that brick displacement too much.

more contrast in the second image, some atmospheric light, warmth.

Looks like a good start but it has a long way to go...

materials - coffee, bricks, couch material, window components all could use a lot of work.

coherent scale - couches are 15" high if each brick course is 2.5" high.

proper use of materials - unlikely brick is depolyed in the ceiling with the same mortar width as the walls (unlikely used at all in the ceiling unless this is the basement of a church, winery, or an old sewer - none of which would have that kind of window).

      background out the window.

      But...it is a good start-

      Good Luck!

photo realistic or how your eye see's it realistic?

photo's have not a lot of dynamic range so you'll have washed out white exteriors.

Not to crit the original author, or to comment on the flaming "brazil vs vray speed " - lol - test, but that scene needs some serious facelift to look realistic. Shaders, light intensities, even object scale imo. You might just end up better starting a new one. Or reset everything, including shaders, and start from scratch.

DOF helped a lot by the way. Some contrast, bloom, usual PP stuff might help as well.

          Best regards,
          A.

as pointed out, you'd really be hard pressed to squeeze photorealism out of this scene. modelling, shading, texturing, they all play a huge part in making an image convincing, and they all seem to be missing there. you'll be definitely better off with something where you can aim to photorealism with every aspect of the scene, not only lighting and post work.

That bloom looks nice! Definitely a step up! What did you use to apply that effect in Photoshop?

Just a duplicated screen blended layer of the original with high contrast and blurred a bit.
