its for a litigation case. the pole was poorly put together and the wires were rubbing together causing sparks to fly everywhere. it started a fire that burned a few hundred thousand acres. i have an animation of the wires rubbing and sparking...i'll see if i can post it.

thanks for the comments. this is actually a very typical job for us though i admit, the litigation viz business can have some strange subject matter at times.

Very cool. But why would the client need a 3d rendering practically identical to a photo?

well the animation is what they paid for. if you look at the reference image you can see that it is slightly different than the still. the reference image shows the pole after the line snapped. the animation shows the lines rubbing, sparking and snapping...then falling into the position as seen in the reference image.
the stills shown above weren't really used by the client...its just the 1st frame of the animation. i'll be able to show the ani when i get around to posting it on our site
                  thanks

Ah, I see. I haven't met anyone here doing litigation visualisation. Sounds quite interesting though. Maybe the litigious nature of U.S. jurisprudence requires more of this type of work.

I would love to see the animation! You've done a top notch job on matching the model to the reference photo.

If the animation looks as good as the still, I'd really want to see it.
I'd say the reference image is a bit softer, which I think looks better.

                              thanks again for the comments.
                              here it is animated: http://www.3dspeedmachine.com/misc/sparks.htm
it looks a little different than the still. its been awhile since i worked on this case and i forgot that i had to turn off displacement for the animation. i never did like the look of certian things, like the sparks, but that wasn't up to me.

@ drjan: now that you mention it i agree...softer looks better. i recall adding some sharpening to the still in post
                              @ mhenry: i cant complain
