  • Helicopter landing

Just finished this little animation (no client, only for my portfolio).

    Helicopter model was from www.3dplanemodels.com

Rendered this one with dmc/dmc on some fairly low settings (for speed) hence the large amount of noise. Had to edit the timing of a couple of views in AE, which unfortunately makes the sea look like boiling oil... I'll be buggered if I'm rendering that out again! Oh well...

Flashing lights and colour correction also done in AE.

    Large version (30mb) www.mcv3d.co.uk/doww/mcv/helilanding.mov

    Small version (7mb) www.mcv3d.co.uk/gal/video/gal04.mov

Only my second animation with max, so be gentle with me...

Looks great to me. Except for the bend in the rotor blades?? When the helicopter is flying they would be pretty much flat, once the blades start to slow down they will deflect, but not until they are almost stopped. It really lets the animation down because there is something so wrong about the bend. No comments about the rest, because it is awesome.

    Cheers Peter.

Thanks Peter, I overlooked that one! Will have to straighten them with an FFD box for the future.

Nice work. The sequence of the hellicopter landing on the deck looks great. I think a little bit of/more motion blur on the hellicopters main body during the flight sequence would help. Really nice overall!

Nice One! What was the MB setting on the propellers?

Thanks all. Motion blur was left at default settings, except for the subdivs changed to 8 and the geometry samples up'ed to 4. Will have to play with 'duration' value to see if I can get a little more blur.

I think the motion looks very good!
I noticed that the noise from the DMC sampler is the same in every frame. Several parts of the animation had that static noise that almost looks camera mapped as everything glides through it. If you turn off the Time independent checkbox in the DMC sampler settings VRay will make the sampling pattern change with time, so that the grain would look more like film-grain.

or use a physical movie camera and expose correctly

egz - thanks, will turn off time independant next time. Are there any situations where you would want to use time independant? or should this always be off?

sv - ah! of course! Used the still cam...doh! One day I'll be good enough to charge money for this stuff....
